blogs.chron.com — For some time, Mac fans have argued that, feature-for-feature, Apple's computers aren't really that much more expensive than their PC competitors. When the processors, memory, hard drive and screens are all matched up, the price premium on a Mac was negligible, they insist, and sometimes non-existent. But does that still hold true?

1. Build a sweet computer for about $500, no OS included2. Run whatever OS you choose, either for a one-time charge, or for free if you're feeling ballsy3. [obligatory] ???4. MUTHAf**kING PROFITProprietary software is one thing, but I refuse to be raped on hardware.

It is amazing how quickly everyone gets all uppity over my tongue in cheek comment. Right because I actually believe that mac owners all secretly own fedoras.

although I agree, this has been said about every single MS OS at release

No,everyone does NOT know or think you have smarts and big bucks if you buy a Mac.. This is what Mac users have been lead to believe by a very persistent ad campaign that has gone on for years. Using a Mac does not make one better than a Windows,Linux or BSD user (OSX being based on BSD by the way). And if you think using a Mac puts you on a higher mental plane than the rest of humanity,,you are living in a fantasy world big time. There id nothing Superior about the hardware made to build a Mac...It's overpriced, for sure. I bought a gig of ram for my Linux box a few months ago and it cost all of $15.00...Ram is ram is ram...I have to wonder why anyone would pay THAT much for ram...Guess it's so Mr. Jobs can upgrade his personal jet.

A consumer who is wise enough to know that say a HP computer will be filled with bloatware will be wise enough to know how to get rid of it.

Better construction and execution in the physical design of the product. Costs more to manufacture things with fine lines out of aluminum. So if a better/stronger physical design and a better OS shouldn't cause an increase in the price, what should? Don't get too worked up about it.

This story is pure garbage. Comparing the base Inspirion 518 to the iMac is unfair. You have to add to the Inspirion system to make it comparable. You have to add a 20" monitor, speakers, wireless, Vista Ultimate, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Premiere Elements. This raises the price after discount to $978, but even then you don't have something comparable to Garageband and you don't have a dual layer optical drive. Then you have to take into consideration the premium for putting the entire computer inside the display, and the fact that the iMac simply looks better. Is that worth a few hundred dollars more? For some people that is the case. I imagine making an Insiprion 518 look like an iMac would raise the price to something similar to the iMac.In fact, the Dell all-in-one, the XPS One is close to the iMac in price, but you can't configure it to be similar in features. So, this story is nonsense. The gap has not widened.

i dont think the price of a Mac is worth it. I can build a desktop thats more powerful than a mac and it will be cheaper than mac.EXP:Mac pro: MAX CPU and RAM configuration(which mean max price for shear power and not adding extra featuresTwo 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon L3 8MB32GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (also with the normal software that come with every mac)cost: $11,999.00For a pc with slightly more powerIntel Quad-Core Xeon 3 GHz Processor L2 12MB I could get this about $380 per prossesor. two of them is $760.A compatible Xeon motherboard about $60032GB 1066Mhz ddr3 ram I can get this for about $600 to 700$Nivida 9600GT DDR3 512MB video card about $1111TB 7200 RPM sata hard drive about $150 to 200 (maybe even $100 if it non-name brand)512 MB ddr3 nivida 9600GT PCI-E video card about $111Vista Ultimate $200. Total $3000 to $4000.Now I?m not saying who?s OS is better but I just think that mac hardware is way over priced compared equivalent hardware. For the BETTER OS there truly no better OS but more of which OS fits with you better. See their people that make Video, picture, and art. A Mac OS will work better for them. Then there are people that use Windows OS for games and business. So there will not be a perfect OS for everyone. Some OS work better for others.
