pirate-party.us — "The Pirate Party is a newly formed worldwide political party with a chapter in the U.S.. We want to fundamentally reform copyright law, overhaul the patent system, and ensure that citizens' rights to privacy are respected. With this agenda, and only this, we are making a bid for representation in anywhere we can get elected."

Hollywood, late 19teens: Greedy, IP-hostile filmmakers moved from New York and Chicago to the Hollywood hills for the sole purpose of dodging enforcement of film making patents. Seriously. Hollywood was founded by "IP pirates".What would the film industry have looked like today if their had been no safe haven from IP cops in the early 20th?Also, didja know that the U.S. did not recognize patents and copyrights of other nations throughout the 19th century? The reason given was that we were a developing nation and needed the breathing room to build our economy unencumbered by European law.

I wont vote for a single issue party because I'm not a single issue person. but I agree with them. knowledge is power. keeping that away from people who need it is just a disaster for the world. I m not talking about Cd's or movies. I'm talking about medicine water cleaning and making power. things that are importend for the poor side of our planet. copyright prevent poor people to get the right aids medicine. so that makes copyright not only inhumane but also murder. and saying that it Will stop people from creating new stuff is bulls**t. what about Passion and care for the world. most inventions were not made for money. and about the fact that people wont make records and video anymore if they are free on the Internet. it is on the Internet and people still make movies and music. did you ever count how much bands you have in your neighborhood that are just playing for fun. because the like making music. not for the money but just because they love to play.

@thereYes, I was simply say that "banning" DRM is a form of censorship. Censorship and/or removing the right to expression is bad across board. There is no justifiable reason for the government to dictate the contents of a product. (baring the obvious illegal ones). And indeed that goes for forcing computer manufacturers to include DRM or device manufacturers to include hardware DRM as well. The music or movie industry or anyone should be able dictate what does or does not go in a computer/iPod/Stereo or whatever. The more obtrusive/badly designed the DRM gets, the worse it will be for those is implement it. I doesn't violate my rights in any way if they lock down a DVD/CD, but driving away customers in droves is more damaging than potentially loosing sales to pirates. DRM is their rope, and they are 100% in their rights to hang themselves with it however they see fit.

"Creators, publishers, companies, and the like aren't gonna create movies, software, etc. unless they get some money"Why is there freeware/open source software and free music?Becase there are, as obscure as it is, people who do release free s**t. On their own accord yes, but your proposal os ludocris, and outlandish.

@smhill I disagree with you on several issues but thanks for taking the time to respond with long post.

I disagree. The name "The Pirate Party" (Piratpartiet) has been one of our greatest assets. On hearing it, people know instantly what it's about. How many newly-formed groups can say that?

The 16th Amendment was not ratified by the required 3/4 of the states, but nevertheless Secretary of State Philander Knox fraudulently announced ratification. Hence... illegal and illegitimate.

The Pirate Party does not stand much chance for winning any election, but no third party ever has. The point is not to win, but to spread the ideas. If they get any substantial vote, or even just get on the ballot, the major parties will pick up and try to get more support next time around, or at least take the thoughts into consideration when they are in office. They are a Single-issue party.

Precisely, that's why their should be a time limit that is set in stone. A head start. Not a forever start.
