torrentfreak.com — Swedish book publishers have presented a study in which they show how widespread book piracy is in Sweden. The publishers think that this copyright infringement has a disastrous effect on their income, while The Pirate Bay is surprised to see that the publishers used their torrent database illegally.

This reminds me of a line from the Simpsons"they're trying to learn for free get them"Normally I'm indifferent about the piracy I see it as a result of a failed business model for selling media that has been slow to adapt to a digital age. This story however falls so well into Stallman's "The right to read" that I find it quite frightening.<a class="user" href="http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html">http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html</a>

Electronic editions of books, especially if you give a few away for free, actually increase sales. Baen books has proven this. Unfortunately no-one else "gets it."<a class="user" href="http://www.baen.com/library/palaver6.htm">http://www.baen.com/library/palaver6.htm</a>

I don't care about book piracy regardless. The only books I've ever purchased are my college textbooks which do cost an arm and a leg and I only get like 30% of what I paid for it by selling it back. Then they make their book all extravagant looking just to make it more expensive. So yeah, I can care less about text book publishers but you can't really group them with novels though. Novels are much smaller and you usually have a choice of hardback or paperback so you don't have to pay as much. It's a pain in the ass to read on a computer screen anyway so pirating books wouldn't be that advantageous to me.

1.) I do have the brightness turned down, but any source of light coming from a "book" just feels wrong.2.) I don't have the money for a laptop and I would buy a new desktop before I would buy a laptop. Plus laptops are a lot bulkier and more annoying to carry around than a simple book. I've considered using a PSP to read books, or maybe the Pandora when it comes out they might work a little better and at least you can hold them in your hand.I don't know turning a page only requires slight finger and wrist movement, if it takes your whole arm I think you're doing something wrong. I like to read before going to sleep sometimes and it's bad for you to be looking at a monitor right before you go to sleep.
