Full Metal JacketThe purpose of Boot Camp is to suppress individuality for the sake of the common good. Such actions are necessary because military activity involves circumstances that are not present in civilian life. Cohesion is stressed, shown through similar appearances in dress, hair styles, and manner. Boot camp also serves as physiological training: if recruits are not able to follow directions involving the routine of boot camp, they will not be able to follow orders in a combat situation, which endangers the whole.Animal Mother did not follow directions because he felt that the lives of the men under the sniper was more important than following orders. This was the wrong thing to do because it was safer for him and the men around him to follow orders. His superior was logically correct in saying that the men were dead and the setup was a trap; by not following orders Animal Mother puts the lives of others in danger. The soldiers are not fighting for freedom, They are fighting because they have to in order to live. If they were fighting for freedom they would have volunteered and South Vietnam would have been a democracy rather than being a dictatorship. Given the chance, most of them would have returned to the United States. The ones who wouldn’t would have stayed for decidedly undemocratic reasons. The song was to suggest the absurdness of the Vietnam war. The soldiers singing a child’s song after they have killed represents the stupidity of fighting a war in a backwater with no purpose or reason.

Common PlaceSummary:In the Frontline episode South Africa: The Play Pump, the reporter, Amy Costello investigates a possible solution to Africa’s lack of water. A new method developed by Trevor Fields, an advertising executive, allows clean water to be easily pumped by a child’s merry-go-round. In addition to saving women much exhaustive and time consuming work, this method, dubbed the play pump, sets up in only a few hours and is cost efficient at 7000 dollars. Trevor also plans to raise revenues for the poor villages by selling advertisings for the water towers on the merry-go-round. He plans to build thousands of these pumps across Africa, feeling it will help both children and their caretakers. Costello does not mention any contradictory points to Field’s position.Arguments supporting Costello’s Position:Position Statement: Field’s water pumps which also serve as merry-go-rounds will do much to improve the lives of Africans lacking water in a cost efficient and humanitarian way.Costello is well versed on Africa issues, having worked there for years and seeing events including the current crisis in Sudan.
