unexplainedmysteriesoftheworld.com — Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25th? Most people assume that it has always been a Christian holiday and that it is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. But it turns out that Jesus was not born on December 25th. However, a whole bunch of pagan gods were born on that day.

But then you open yourself to the always witty "Digg deeper, Watson" retort.

My life is pretty good. It might help some people, and be good for them. But I also feel in some senses, that it makes things worse. We teach people to believe stuff even in the face of contrary facts and we teach that it is a good thing. Believe and you will be rewarded. Don't, and go to hell. It is kind of stupid. If it were real, I wouldn't have to believe in it. It would present itself to me. Or it could be verified. But it can't, so if it were true, God is one illogical creature. Or maybe more accurately, hates people who use logic and can think for themselves.

@ cubbyOur "point of view" is to not HAVE a f**king point of view. Why cant you understand this? When we argue with you, its only to try and show you why the reasons you think you're right, are not good enough reasons to be used as an argument or evidence. Why cant you just say "yeah, believing in God isn't supposed to make literal sense, otherwise it wouldn't be faith" Instead of pretending like you have reasons that would hold up under scrutiny. This type of thing is what pushes people away and makes them dislike you. Instead of people thinking that being a christian means believing in Christ and setting a good example, it looks as though we have to be unreasonable towards all sorts of things that have f**k all to do with believing in Jesus. Most Catholics seem to grasp this concept. I can pretty much bet that you are not a catholic. Am i right? I would wager that you are a Baptist.

The pagans celebrated the winter solstice which in ancient times fell on December 25th. It was the pagans that started the tradition of having a decorated tree tree in the house. To help the spread of Christianity the pagans were told they could keep their traditions if they converted to Christianity so Jesus's birth was celebrated on December 25th. Much later the calendar was modified to make it more accurate. Because of this modification to the calendar the winter solstice fell on December 21st but Christmas continued to be celebrated on December 25th. So in reality Christmas really has nothing to do with Jesus or anything Christian. Not that any of this matters because Jesus was just a regular man and all the supernatural stuff in the bible is total crap.

Don't worry, everyone knew it must have been a nonsense mistake. The earth isn't even 20000 years old!

Sorry, Ive already seen it.I really liked Zeitgeist, but as a qualified historian, I must tell you that the entire Religion section is bulls**t. The whole thing. That disappointed me because the rest of the film was very thought provoking.

IHaveIssues, Jesus IS the reason for the season. We Christians celebrate the birth of the Savior on Dec. 25th. That doesn't mean we think He was born on that day. BTW, My son Devin was born on Dec 25. Happy Birthday son! Best Christmas present ever.

"It has no biblical basis." You mean like Christmas?

I read the bible story about the birth of Christ tonight. I was horrified about all the children Herod murdered. Why didn't God send a few angels to warn all those people?

Also, nowhere does it say they were "wise" men. Only mages, astrologists. Occupations frowned upon by God.

Firstly, Rome was the first Empire to convert to Christianity. None of its enemies were Christian. The ones thrown to the lions were Roman citizens who refused to acknowledge the godhood of the Emperor - treason at the time.Secondly, during the reign of Constantine the empire had not been divided in to East and West, so he was Emperor of all Rome not just the western part.

If you are not sure there is a God and have doubts
that Jesus Christ is His Son...
