imgur.com — Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. Happy Memorial Day! Thank you to all the men and women who died serving their country.

@cygnusHad you stopped at "I'm interested in your proof." I would have believed you and responded with greater substance. Since you chose to add gratuitous insult, I'm left doubting that you are truly interested.None the less, here's a freebie: go look up Herbert Hoover's work for the oil industry years prior to becoming the 20s version of GWB. Look up the survey he did of potential oil deposits beneath the litoral waters of Vietnam. Educate yourself as to who was funding Ho Chi Minh in his efforts to rid his homeland of the occupying French. See if you can figure out why the US encouraged and inflamed their civil war. You might also want to ask why so much ordnance was dumped (and detonated) in the sea following US bombing runs over Vietnam. (Were ordnance masters really so bad at figuring out how many bombs were needed for a given run? Really?)Do a little homework and get back to me, if you are REALLY interested. I'm not interested in throwing stones. There's enough of that going around as it is.

Oh, and this argument as nothing to do with joining the military. Good way of siderailing the conversation, though.

Easy Gonorrhea. While Memorial Day is indeed the day set aside to honor our veterans, it also serves as a symbolic beginning to the summer season. Much like the birth of Christ has us exchanging bath towels and fruit cake.

Yeah GO USA! Let's join, get trained to be killing robots, possibly get killed ourselves/maimed for life. All for the glory of old men in charge who are having a pissing match with other old men from another land! Oh the honor we shall have! Yes then freedom will be protected somehow because I see our enemies lurking at our very borders wanting the freedom we have! The very freedom they could get if they just applied to live in our country or get a working visa!

Sad people can't put politics aside for five minutes to respect this man. I don't care what you're political reservations are, bravo sir! Happy Memorial Day!

First of let me apologize for not getting back to you in a timely fashion… I don’t call people who “who challenge my world-view” Stupid… I call people who say stupid things stupid… If anyone make a bold statement & attempts to back it up by sighting an event that totally disproves their statement… I’m going to laugh & call them stupid… Your just going to have to deal with that… In 1941 were California, Oregon & Washington US States… Yes & they all had been for over 50 years… (Some a good deal over.) Were these states connected to the the rest of the US… Yes they were… Were the people who lived there US Citizens… Why yes they were… What part of that are you not understanding… The fact that California was Mexican land before it was a state has nothing to do with what we are talking about… It was Spanish land before that… And the home of native Americans before that… In case you didn’t know… None of that makes any difference to the fact that it is a U.S. state… An more importantly was one during the time when the forces where stationed in pearl harbor to defend us… Now I’m going to skip your whole next section… Because not only is it totally off topic… It does nothing to disprove the statement that those brave men who died there did so in defense of there country.. Unless of course you believe they all new the attacks were coming & simply choose to do nothing about it… For jokes… My opinion on whether or not The US President knew about the attack on pearl harbor I’ll keep to myself… Not only Because it is in fact an opinion & they have no place in debates… Or intelligent disagreements… Something you’d do well to remember… But also because such things have no place on any article discussing memorial day… I have long since gave up on trying to convince people to rethink ignorant positions.. I simply point them out…
