Allow me to be the first to actually comment on the article:This isn't an article just about OS X and Apple. Yes they are referring to this platform but I assure you this issue is impacting and will further touch all platforms, including Windows and Linux. Applications that are sold off how pretty they are when they offer no new real functionality, and sometimes even less than the competition are something to worry about. When developers see programs like "Disco" sell well they are going to scrap their new ideas for the next great app, be it for Apple or Windows (or both, this is becoming much more common), or anything else, and start working on candying up the old ones. Secondly when you see an article that refers to OS X on Digg, or any operating system that you don't use or have interest in, please don't bash it. I'm not a fanboy, I'm a computer user that uses Digg for my news, that happens to be running OS X. When I see Windows articles that have no impact on OS X I ignore them, I don't post Window fanboy comments. At the time I started writing this, every comment on the article, every single one had nothing to do with the article and everything to do with this pity issue. Not one of those people read the two articles this Digg is pointing at, for if they did they would realize how it impacts them as well.
holy f**kRTFA and STFU about fanboyism. If you don't like it, STFU and go away. If you do, post something intelligent. This is the first time I've only modded up for one post. WTF is the matter with digg now?Regarding the article, isn't this something we've seen for years now? Selling a new product simply because it's pretty? See MS Office since '97, XP, Vista. I'm sure that the mac world has equivalents; I'm just a neophyte user so I don't know the history. Seems to me that NeXTSTEP was on par with OSX, mostly. Earlier today there was a post about a guy who demonstrated how there was really nothing new in Vista that can't be done in Windows 3.1.1. Our computers are getting faster and faster but their performance is decreasing constantly due to the prettiness that most users demand. Any real comments?
I am developer, and I have to disagree with most here in that looks ARE important...When most people look for a new car, do they look at the one that looks like a box, but is safe and gets 57mpg, or the one that looks sleek, has chrome tail pipes, and does 0-60mph in 4.3sec? Odds are, most people fantasies about BMW M3s, not Toyota Prius.Looks are important. The feel of the UI is important. If you, as a developer, haven't put any though into its "wow" factor, well, you have obviously failed. Sex sales, get over it. This is true for clothes, cars, perfume, and even OSes. Just as Seth Godin preaches, people go to Tiffany's for the "blue box". The jewelery is free. If you wanted to change the world, you would figure out how to bottle that and use it to your advantage.
If I had to choose between two applications with exactly the same functionality I would choose the one that is the most visually appealing to me. Sure I'm a graphic designer/junkie, but still, it's just so much more fun to use something pretty. :)

I'm digging you up not only because I f**king hate Apple and their retarded fans, but because I watched Return of the Jedi yesterday.
