"If nuclear resurges, I hope to hell it's done safely"At this point, I think its safe to say that its safer than oil.Conservatively 100,000 people have died as a result of nuclear power accidents (although as many as 300,000 may have suffered cancer or birth defects from them).However, well over 1M people have died in oil wars, and its only going to get worse.Finally, the earth is suffering from fossil fuel burning.I think its only logical that we move forward with nuclear, even if its only as safe as it has been historically.

Wow an intelligent article on Nuclear power for a change. Nuclear IS the only option when you consider the physics of energy distribution. You need a steady power station to meet the base electrical load of a network. The only sources that can meet this demand are: Coal, Oil, Gas, and Nuclear. Super large hydro in some cases works, but the resulting lake does a lot of damage and there are only a few places in the world where it is practical to build a dam and the resulting lake. See an obvious choice in that list? I certainly do. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the answer is Nuclear for the base load, and lots of distributed renewables where applicable to meet the mid and peak loads.

I just don't understand it. Is the point of rebuilding to say, "Well, Nature got us this time, but we will prevail!" At what point will they realize it's not a war to be won? I'm sorry but it just doesn't seem to be worth endangering the lives nor spending the money--building under sea level in that area just isn't sensible.<a class="user"
