forgot to mention: if you buy hard anodized stuff, buy calphalon. avoid circulon, kitchen aid, cuisenart, etc. Amazon's prices for cookware fluctuate wildly. I bought this set for $125 through a promotion:http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Commercial-Hard-Anodized-9-Piece/dp/B0007KQZ3O/The trick is to stick it in your shopping cart and just leave it there. It will let you know when the price changes. Check every few days and buy when it gets low enough.

Re:microwaveA project for a high school science fair showed that plants died when watered using only microwaved water. Of course, I still use one to reheat food and yesterday's coffee. And I always thought a mandolin was a stringed musical instrument.

I'm not ashamed to admit I shop for cookware at garage sales and thrift stores. I stocked my kitchen about the same way as the author of the article did, but for less than $100 (not counting the Cuisinart, a christmas gift from my family, to replace the mandoline. It slices, it dices.) And I am a damn good cook. People offer me sex for my creations of culinariness.

I got most of my kitchen equipment at yard sales. My large pots are crappy thin aluminum, but that doesn't matter when you're making pasta or soup. My knives are all hand-me-downs from my mom, and my step-dad got me a whetstone at a yard sale. You'll want mineral oil to go with the whetstone. I got a mandoline for free from the local freecycle list. The blade needed sharpening, but the whetstone took care of that. I don't think you could sharpen a mandoline blade in an electric sharpener. I bought a cheap stand mixer at Target and burned out the motor the second time I used it. My ex-girlfriend had a big Kitchen-Aid mixer that she never used, so she gave it to me (things didn't work out, but she's still awesome). I got a bread machine at a yard sale. They're great for getting started in baking, but now I knead the dough in the Kitchen-Aid and bake it in the oven. I have two non-stick skillets: one is a beautiful, big, deep one (that came with the apartment) that I use all the time for stir-fry, the other is a squarish, low-sided, flat one that I use for pancakes (a lot of the coating has worn off by now, though). Don't buy the cheapest can openers; they're just frustrating. I've always been happy with Swing-A-Way can openers. Don't get a glass cutting board with a pebbled surface like I did; it's probably more hygienic than wood or plastic, but the pebbled surface means you can't cut cleanly through a piece of chicken. I've got a microwave I bought in the early-90s. I don't heat stuff in it often, but it's nice to have, and I use the timer on it all the time. :) I'd never buy one of those rotisserie ovens, but a friend has one, uses it often, and it does turn out really good chicken and roasts. I picked up a Ginsu rotary cheese grater at a yard sale that I really like. If I had a rice cooker, I just might eat rice twice a day. You'll probably want a corkscrew. I like the standard wing-style corkscrews; they open a bottle of wine well, and also pop the top off a bottle of beer. I also like having a hot-air corn popper and a waffle iron around. They're single-use, but I use them. For coffee, I started with an automatic drip machine (nothing fancy), then got a non-electric drip pot-with-filter-holder (drop in a cone filter, coffee, and pour in hot water). I'm happy with both of them, but the non-electric one needs more coffee per cup of water to taste right to me. Eventually I dropped the money for a french press and I never looked back. I got a stainless steel french press because a friend's sister once suffered serious burns when her glass french press shattered while she was pushing the plunger down. I've heard good things about percolators, but never had one. I also got a small burr coffee grinder that I also use for grinding flax seed, in addition to coffee. Don't forget a toaster! Or ice cube trays! The things I really need in the kitchen, though, are more cupboard space and more counter space.

Nice take on the usual bull involved in fitting out kitchens. We do love it when people go for our high ticket items and our designer Mike's creations, burt we are just as happy to point someone at the special offer handles we have available.http://www.householdhandles.com/Special_Offers.htm

Great idea.. For those who don't need a lot of kitchen equipment, these suggestions are enough to have them on your kitchen walls as well.
