boston.com — Long before the space race and space shuttle, a brilliant, wealthy, charming Boston Brahmin named Percival Lowell popularized the idea that we are not alone in the universe. As the next US spacecraft prepares to descend upon the Red Planet, it's an idea worth revisiting.

If you ever get a chance to visit Mars Hill in Flagstaff Arizona , by all means take it. Probably the most accessible historical telescope in the world. I did get a chance to peer through the Clark telescope on a night of public viewing during a recent Mars opposition . And Pluto is alive and well in Flagstaff.

Lowell was the classic open minded scientist, who unfortunately must have been snacking on some magic mushrooms. you see, with the limited optics available in his time, he really believed he saw massive surface scarring in linear and spoke-like patterns indicative of massive earthworks that could only be made by a civilization. These patterns turned out to be a trick of optics and an overactive imagination. Nevertheless, before the core of Mars solidified and there was still a magnetic shield to protect against the solar wind, there is little doubt in my mind that multicellular life existed on the red planet. Perhaps nothing approaching an animal kingdom like we have here, but life almost for certain.
