blog.wired.com — After seemingly endless delays, the OpenMoko phone is here. The first version of the NEO 1973 mobile phone, which carries the Linux kernel inside and is not locked to a specific network, is available for purchase from OpenMoko.com.

Brand loyalty is a mental disorder to begin with. What possible benefit does it have to the person 'oh you did something nice 4 years ago so now I'm going to spend my hard earned cash on this recent junk'. Honestly I don't see the point, it's almost like being brainwashed to accept rubbish so they can sell you more rubbish next year when you figure out this rubbish is indeed rubbish. If somehow Linux went proprietary tomorrow and Windows went FOSS I'd switch to Windows. Well actually I'd probably go BSD or Plan 9 but if all OSS projects went proprietary then I'd go to Windows.

OpenMoko has been in development for years. Any similarity to the iPhone is merely coincidental.

That oversized keychain is fugly. The day someone invents a phone that is better looking than the iPhone, simpler to use and with a richer feature set, then you can start talking about serious competition. But I'm not holding my breath. Case in point: the iPod has been out since what, 2001, and STILL has no serious contenders. The Zune may be good, but its market share is still tiny.

In case you are too dumb to realize, this phone is in production before the iPhone was announced. So how about you layout the lame who copied who tactic ok?

From TFA: "But what's more important to consumers -- a super-sexy status item that's locked to one carrier and one set of functions, or a less sexy look-alike with a fully free and open software system?"The problem with that statement is that the average consumer doesn't give a rat's a$$. Geeks like us might care but we don't exactly represent the average tech user (or the majority of the consumer market for that matter).

"so was the Chevy Nova.. or No va - "You do not go" in Spanish) I'm betting this product doesn't sell well in Spanish speaking areas..."Stop regurgitating stupid urban legends. The Nova sold fairly well in latin american countries and spanish speaking areas because they didn't automatically associate "Nova" with "No va"<a class="user" href="http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp">http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp</a>
