informationisbeautiful.net — Of course, the political spectrum is not quite so polarised. Actually, it’s more of a diamond shape, apparently. But this is how it’s mostly presented via the media – left wing vs. right wing, liberal vs. conservative, Labour vs Tory. And perhaps in our minds too…

Wow. This is a well organized collection of stereotypes.

I remember my history teacher pulling out a paper and having everyone in the class fill out. The paper asked questions which were the principal disagreements between right and left thinking. Literally, except for two people every right person was on the one side of the room and similar for the left. I was the only right thinker sitting with the left. Ever year she did this exam, the class division was more prominent each year. In this chart, I agree with how they described the right. But I am still the outlier and work in the scientific realm. This really showed the Rural / Urban beleifs are dividing and almost to the point of creating a true social divide like the south and north in the 1800's.

Current libertarianism: get the government out of my wallet and out of my social life.Current liberalism: get the government into my wallet, and not as much into my social life.Current republicanism: get the government into my wallet and into my social life.If you want to talk about branches of political philosophy, Republicans and Democrats are far closer to each other than Libertarians are to either.

My turn! My statement needed no backing up. It just needs an understanding of logic. If I need to explain this, everything I say will just be a repeat of a philosopher who said it better than I. You aren't (and shouldn't act like you are) given rights until you have all that you could possibly have. Rights should be assumed until it infringes on another's rights. You aren't free unless all of your rights are protected. You should be free to buy and sell if in no way does this private contract infringe on anybody's rights. Simple. Now to refute what you said about market regulation. People seem to have a screwed up definition of market regulation. Market regulation should not be about fixing prices, or incentives to corporations to do what they should've been doing in the first place, but it should be about stopping monopolies, and preserving market rights, (which as I said before are no different than human rights.)If you want to talk memes though, first they have to be funny. You lose in all aspects.

Take some time to look at the graphic again. Try not to think about what it says about you personally. Keep in mind that communists and nationalists are represented as well. And keep your mind open to the possibility that all of the values expressed in the graphic achieve the same goals, but in different ways. This image makes no judgments. It is very cleverly conceived and I would imagine that if the author/artist were trying to convey a judgment, he or she would have been much more clear about it. The scrutiny that you and others are feeling comes from your end, not the artists indicating that it in some way struck very close to home. Try using this image as tool for understanding your own positions instead of a ruler for measuring your worth.“In a controversy, the instant we feel anger, we have already ceased striving for truth and have begun striving for ourselves” Abraham J. Heschel

I'm a white man, and I'm on the left. A lot of my friends are as well. You said men, I didn't see any implied statement about their race. Maybe you should have said rich, angry white men, southerners, and religious fanatics.

The idea that there even can be such things as free markets is a right wing construct. Markets only exist on a substrate of government. Corporations are a creation of government.

bjornski,And you're championing a "I'm right and you're wrong, so I'll coerce you via economic or social means to ensure you see things they way I do".It's a mentality that's been quite common with both Democrats and Republicans for a very long time, and unfortunately people like you continue taking the bait and believing one is better than the other. If you're tired of the lesser of two evils, vote for the greater of two goods - Libertarians.

Agreed. This is a silly infographic which paints a parody of the sterotypes of Conservative vs Liberal divide. I'm a liberal because I believe in raising an emotionally stable child - but wait? He also believe strongly in the principle of respect for authority? Abominable! I like being able to keep the money I earn to do as I see fit. Yet he firmly believes in charity as a means of augmenting societal problems. What? Blasphemy!Pidgeon holes are for birds. I digg this only to illustrate how hilarious warped ideological bulls**t really is.
