I was in Tokyo last year. They have similar things there, too, so it's not a matter of large scale or small. There wasn't a compost in the apartment, but there was a lot of sorting of garbage. It's a good step. People who are used to living in waste take it for granted that change isn't possible, so they whine and complain about the status quo instead of making a difference. To quote Eleanor Roosevelt: "It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."
