While most of what you said is true, you're missing the fact that Ataturk is, like somebody mentioned above, still a recent memory.. There are people still alive in Turkey, who actually met him in person...Give it time, and he will be historic enough that making fun of him won't offend people anymore.I'm not sure how Americans would have behaved if somebody made fun of George Washington within a generation of his death...

""""Who killed anyone over Ataturk being insulted?"""How about the url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istanbul_Pogrom where 15 greeks died and thousands of greeks lost their houses/shops, greek women got raped, etc simply because there was a rumour that Kemal's house in salonica was bombed by greeks(which of course never happened, this was an organised plan by the turkish government to terrorize greeks in Istanbul and this lie was the excuse to do that). There used to be hundreds of thousands greeks living in Istanbul, ever wondered why there are only couple thousands greeks now?In any case, i am against any fascist decisions that limit freedom of speech. And most of Europe cant say "Omg, Turkey is barbaric cause they try to limit freedom of speech" because many european countries have laws which can put you into prison for just denying the jewish holocaust. Only stupid and nazi people deny the holocaust but by making the denial illegal, you automatically become an assh**e fascist scum in my book.As far as Kemal, yes if it wasnt for him, Turkey would have been just like other islamic countries. But thanks to him, Turkey is a semiwestern country. Many turks that live in instanbul/minor asia/western turkey are "westernised" but there are many turks who live in eastern turkey who are a long long way away from europe(culturally). Turkey has 2 poles of power, the military and the islamic. Right now the military pole has the upper hand, which means that Turkey has a semidictatorship with limited human rights and few democratic procedures. On the other hand, the military pole keeps the fanatic islamists at bay. But if you weaken the military pole and make the country more "democratic"(meaning that the actual elected people will rule the country and not the military), the islamic pole will gain power. Most turks are muslims. Although many of them are moderate muslims, its easy for fanatic muslims to gain power through the electoral process and then possibly convert turkey to an islamic state. This is exactly the reason why the military pole has so much power. It takes time to become democratic, you cannot simply enforce democracy to people. And Turkey slowly becomes more democratic. The more turkish people mature, the more they will realise that there is no need for fanaticism. And the more they realise that, the more democratic will become.""" Shouldn't you be out aiding the PKK, as the Greeks have done previously? And you wonder why Turks don't like Greeks when the Greeks have no problem sheltering Kurdish terrorists such as Abdullah Ocalan. """First of all, i doubt the official greek government had knowledge of Ocalan sheltering(not at first at least). If they had, they would probably cut a deal with the turks to turn him over(which is what probably happened in the end). But do you really want to talk about kurds? Seriously, do you? We are talking about a huge population, which has been oppressed for god knows how many years, which has even been denied of its own identity/independence, which inhabits a large part of turkey and which are very likely to detach completely from turkey. Lets not go there.

Danial, great post. Most people don't know that Turkey was the first European country to give women the vote. And yeah, I'm surprised that the LGF fanatics haven't turned up and posted comments blaming this on Islam and liberals.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is a closed minded prick who got into power by sleeping with men. He also molested little boys.
