rudd-o.com— A look at how Dell is really scamming Linux users into paying more for hardware and how Dell really does not want to offer Linux because they will be dumped by the almighty Microsoft.

Um, this was almost a year ago 7/11/07..why is anyone digging it now? Also i believe this was corrected shortly after by Dell so both systems got the same upgrade. I guess this site needed some more ad revenue so try tried to redigg it acting like it was new.
I recently bought a quad core Dell Vostro 400 - you can't even seem to buy quad core Linux Dell desktops anyway! - and it was about the same price as a dual core Ubuntu equivalent, despite the CPU being worth a good $150 more. Basically, Dell puts all their offers on the Windows boxes only - free shipping, memory upgrades, larger hard drives etc. etc. - making the Ubuntu equivalents a lot less attractive. It's clear that a) Dell hide their Linux offerings to avoid upsetting MS and b) if you do find them, they're worse value (again, to push you back to the Windows versions so that they keep up their volume sales that qualify them for huge OEM discounts on Windows).Dell are totally betraying the Linux community with these sleights of hand, but I've got to admit that their (Windows!) prices are great if you find the right offer. The Vostro I picked up was about $200 cheaper than anyone else was selling and apart from waiting for BIOS update to fix the 4GB issue on 64-bit OS'es (I lose 771MB!), I'm very happy with it...just spotted a new BIOS, but fix isn't in the release notes, grrr...
"$275 free upgrade"That is really confusing. buying a linux dell is just to shove it in microsofts face. This story was probably written by someone who the next day will complain that Microsoft is a monopoly and makes too much money. This is just a rant on Dell because Dell sees a future in linux and is investing in it.
@speed: We have to agree about something. Or MicroSoft is selling Boxes with software, or MicroSoft is selling licences. If it is boxes they're selling, you can install it on whatever quantity of computers. If not, and it is licences they are selling, you can grab the most cracked windows of the net, enter your licence key, and having a leggit version. It's not AND.. AND.. , although companies would like you to believe that.
The Dell Laptops have only lacked in options since Dell released Linux Laptops. Recently, Dell has added the XPS laptop. the XPS laptop has many features that the other models did not. I have not compared prices with the dell linux laptops, but they could aways be cheaper. I really havent had many issues with dell's linux laptops and overall I am happy they are there.

The article said they were the same pc, just you could get a 2gb and 160gb upgrade, which shouldn't affect the installation of Ubuntu in any way.
