lists.xcf.berkeley.edu — Appearing on the GIMP developer mailing list, The GIMP has now been compiled and usable as an OS X native app, without requiring the clumsiness of running with X11. Developers report that there are still a few glitches, and it will need work before being ready for general users, but it works and natively. Bring on the graphics competition!

GTK+ = Gimp ToolKit. So while it may be too bad it wasn't written in QT, it isn't surprising. When GIMP/GTK+ was started, I don't think QT was a free alternative. Hopefully, The effort to port GTK to OSX will involve using there HIG as well.Thank you Immendio!

M. Gagnon posted the actual build instrauctions to the wiki at <a class="user" href="http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/HowToCompileGimp/MacOSX">http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/HowToCompileGimp/MacOSX</a>

ugh menus stuck to windows, what a horrible interface
gmorganMar 25, 2007
@jellomizerWRT the menubar. The way Windows does it is largely pointless and adds nothing over the OSX one bar system but on Linux you can do interesting things with window focus that allows you to place two windows over each other (so the second one is at the back with its menu bar just appearing over the top of the first) and access the second windows menu bar while keeping the first one on top and in sight. It's not really an every day benefit if I'm honest but I like to be able to do it. I customise my laptop to an absurd level since it is designed to be for me and me alone. I don't care if there isn't another person in the planet who can't use it. It is tuned exactly to my work flow. (this is probably why the Linux desktop has no consistency). Not that the OSX system isn't good enough for most people. There are few who have actual need for virtual workspaces, customised click events and customised focusing models.

Photoshop is for people on the professional level who need good image editing software in order to do their jobs, and to enjoy it for themselves. Gimp on the other hand is for amateurs who aren't doing anything important, and just wanna screw around with some free toy. They have two completely different purposes.

yea... too bad the GIMP still sucks.this is one case where the name is amazingly accurate

dschep you don't happen to be one of those lifeless nerds at #gimp channel who alienates every single end user interested in Gimp do you?Keep working for Adobe.

QT really doesn't mean Apple friendly or native. Check Opera, Skype and Google Earth to see what I mean.

People calling me to "Stfu" while I try to defend developers and call for respect doesn't help either.I almost got banned when I asked why GIMP doesn't do 48bit.Sad thing is, you can be sure that they didn't code a single line or donated a dollar for GIMP, they are self declared "support" people or "Supporters" who does more harm to project than anything. There are actually some people who rejects to use anything opensource because of that kind of people. They really know what would happen if they needed support.

You were hardly "almost banned" or told to "Stfu"? quite the contrary. You asked a question which demanded that someone tell you 1 good reason why there's no 48bit support. People listened and told you good reasons in response, which prompted further discussion. This is not being told to "Stfu".I can see why there is no support? it's a quality greater than most (any) monitor can view, and therefore is a bit of a niche feature targeted at people who can clearly see a different between 32-bit and 48-bit. Only a technical guru can implement this kind of feature as it requires some pretty specific knowledge in order to implement, so I guess that guy just hasn't come along yet.Open-source lives because guys like you come along and say "why doesn't it have this obscure feature", they then combine this with coding knowledge and implement the feature.I'm no great coder, but I've contributed to open-source before. I'd love to see 48-bit implemented for your sake and hope someone does implement it, but I don't know where to start, nor do I have the hardware to test the feature. I think most developers would be in the same boat as me. I don't have a 48-bit display, nor do I have an insanely good scanner that can import images at this quality.I do however have a professional grade camera that I use for work that does not take 48-bit images, however I use it for some pretty advanced work. I guess if you need better quality than I do you probably wouldn't be looking at open-source alternatives such as GIMP, Photoshop is clearly the best app out there on the Mac for image editing, without argument. Grab a quality if you need insanely high quality features.

An interesting experiment, but I'll continue to use GimpShop for now, it's more user-friendly than just plain ol' Gimp.

One year later still no release.

Yeah, visual menu context without having to have the window be active. That is horrible.
