readwriteweb.com — If you're a fan of digg, you've probably been noticing that tech stories are becoming less and less a feature of the social news site. The reason? Digg is attempting to attract a large mainstream user base. Just how low has tech sunk in digg? We have new data that shows that the number of frontpage tech stories is halving every year on digg.

Again, I don't want "news" here. I want tech stories. Digg used to provide me with them, and doesn't anymore.

Yes, I think if you were to really aggregate the categories of interest to tech folks (especially with an eye to comparability with Slashdot's traditional focuses), it would be Technology + Gaming + Science + a few elements of Entertainment (Music, Movies, and Comics/Animation with tech.geek relevance) + a very tiny slice of World & Business (Politics stories relevant to tech interests). But for the purposes of this article's comparison, you'd really want to add Tech + Gaming + Science together to determine its relative weight against the other topic areas, which are mostly frivolous content (from a tech POV).

I like the tech section, but I come here for the design stories and am happy to look at both. And I like going through the newly added unpopular stories so I do get the variety that I want. YMMV

surely captain Rose is evolving the site to show us more media based on that which we digg... i wish all this social media would do a lot more learning from our habits, and the preferences of those we befriend - it would be like meta-meaning, a way to distill patterns, which is a core function of intelligence. Cuts the spam too, if done right.

I may be the odd man out but I find that there is a good overall balance to the stories on Digg if you customize your preferences in your profile. I also enjoy a good tech article as much as the next man but there really is only so many interesting articles in any category before you start going over the same s**t over and over again, anyone that's ever listened to the TWIT Podcasts for more than a few weeks can a test to this fact even though they are excellent in their coverage and commentary; hell lately they've even been making the same audio book recommendations over and over again.
