It's not just hate group members who lose rights if it becomes okay to persecute perceived hate groups. ALL of us lose the right to freedom of thought, which is an absolute prerequisite to any meaningful civil liberties. Even if 'thought crimes' like stripping rights from admitted KKK supporters never spilled over to less extreme groups, the fact that all of our thoughts and opinions would be subject to legal scrutiny is a terrifying precedent in its own right.

@LenBaird: I don't think rheaume was implying that you should let them search your person or that you care what they think of you. Rather, he's trying to get you to empathize with these police. They're not thugs, they're just doing their job and the majority of people they deal with are scuzzy and are hiding stuff. So if a cop asks to search your person, say no, but don't expect that saying no won't raise the cop's suspicions. That's not to say that the cop has a right to violate your rights, but saying no may prompt him to do a more thorough visual inspection, radio in your info to see if there are any warrant, etc., etc., and you shouldn't be surprised or disgruntled if the cop takes such actions.

@ Speed:For a true conservative Canadian party, check out www.libertarian.ca. Neo-conservatism is has it roots in the left side of politics, it is not a form of conservatism at all IMO.
