"The Bible of course teaches the correct shape of the earth."Yeah, the Bible also teaches that the Earth sits on pillars similar to what the Greeks believed (1 Samual 2:8). and that stars can fall out of the sky and onto the Earth (Revelation 8:11).Furthermore, it teaches mythical world wide floods that we know for sure did not happen since there is no geological evidence to support the idea (and is a walking contradiction even if for the sake of argument it did happen, since it mandates massive amounts of evolution in very short periods of time). It teaches biological impossibilities such as someone coming back to life after being dead for three days (there are exactly 0 recorded medical cases of this happening), and it teaches that a woman became pregnant without having sex with a man (there are exactly 0 recorded medical cases of a human female undergoing parthenogenesis). Not to mention the fact that it isn't even original. The entire story of Jesus was clearly ripped from other religions, such as the story of Osiris in Egyptian religion. Many of the psalms were ripped from Pharaonic wisdom writings as well.Yeah. That's a real reliable book you got there.
Silly religion article. I knew the moment I saw this that there would be more comments (stupid and intelligent ones) accompanied by more emotion and debate than any story I've seen so far. Nice.
I think most people don't have a problem with the bible, and most people don't have a problem with Jesus, the problems that most people have that causes them to be so negative towards the bible are twofold: 1.) A lot of Christians are jerks. and 2.) The bible says really hard things. The fact that a lot of Christians are jerks is unfortunate, because Jesus is a really great guy, which is why I tell people who are put off by Christianity to take a look at Jesus in the bible and forget for a while all the horrible sins committed in His name. And also, cut Christians some slack, because they are no better than anyone else as a whole, some are better, some are worse. The second fact is harder to accept. The bible is filled with very difficult teachings, and in a world of postmodernism it is hard to accept what that bible teaches because it is so contrary to what our culture teaches. The fact is that the bible does talk about sin, and death, and hell, and torment, and those things are very bad news. But the bible also offers some very Good News, namely that all those bad things it talks about can be avoided and defeated through Jesus Christ. If you start with Jesus, and read the bible with an understanding that from Genesis to Revelation it is meant to explain the story of Jesus Christ, it all makes a lot more sense.Jesus himself said that he would be misunderstood, that his followers would be hated and in his own lifetime as many people spat at him and walked away as fell down and worshipped him as Lord, and 2000 years later things are the same way. @the poster who said the bible doesn't teach the nature of the trinity or hell- the bible does teach of a literal hell, Jesus himself is actually the source for a large part of the bible's teaching on hell. However, the biblical hell is little like the popular image we have of fire with devils and pitchforks. That hell is quite literally a creation of the Roman Catholic chruch, advanced and made popular by authors like Dante and John Milton. What Jesus said about hell is quite different, but no less frigthening. Mt 5:21-22, Mt 5:29-30, Mt 10:28, Lk 12:4-5, Mt 23:15, Mt 23:33. Jesus sometimes did refer to hell as a firey place, but the word he used referred to a valley near Jerusalem that was promised as a place where Israel would be abandoned. Likewise, in the parable of Lazurus and the rich man, the principle characteristic of hell is abandonment, separation from God. Also, hell is not a place that Satan rules. The bible says teaches that Satan has some power in the world we live in today, but promises that he will be sent to hell in the end as well in Revelation. One thing that most Christians don't even realize is that Jesus rules in hell and not Satan (Rev 14:10).Also, the trinity is a certainly biblical principle, though it is more a matter of Theology than scripture. The Christian God, the God of the bible, is a triune God. This is never stated explicity in the bible, but is wholly supported by scripture. The bible makes many references to God the Father, Jesus, God the Son, and the Holy Ghost (also referred to as the Holy Spirit, Paraclete (helper), and Spirit of God). The trinity is not three Gods, rather, three distinct aspects or facets of one God. If Jesus is God as the bible claims (and I believe), was God then not in heaven while in human form? Who did Jesus pray to in the garden before his arrest? Most certainly God the Father was still in heaven. Jesus too makes many referrences to the Father during his ministry, and also talks about the Holy Spirit, whom he calls the Helper. The triune nature of God is farther expounded apon in the Pauline letters, where Paul discusses the nature of the three persons of the trinity to one another, proving that there is a heirarchy between the three, but that all three are the same God. The trinity is less important to my point, but if you read this take away just this, That Jesus is God and he has made himself known to you through the bible and through nature. Don't judge him based on those who claim to be his followers or the religions operating under his name, read the gospels, decide for yourself whether he should be worshipped or scorned, and live your life accordingly.
"Furthermore, It teaches biological impossibilities such as someone coming back to life after being dead for three days (there are exactly 0 recorded medical cases of this happening), and it teaches that a woman became pregnant without having sex with a man (there are exactly 0 recorded medical cases of a human female undergoing parthenogenesis)" Dude your talking about God f**ken idiot.
"Boy do you have your lions crossed" - no pun intended...Anyways, there are a many lines of reasoning that disable the thought of a "Triune God". That though would take a bit of time to explain and leave you without possible doubt, I will pass along a couple of thoughts. The Origin of the Trinity is explained here ---The New Encyclopædia Britannica says: “Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord’ (Deut. 6:4). . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies. . . . By the end of the 4th century . . . the doctrine of the Trinity took substantially the form it has maintained ever since.”—(1976), Micropædia, Vol. X, p. 126.The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “The formulation ‘one God in three Persons’ was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, prior to the end of the 4th century. But it is precisely this formulation that has first claim to the title the Trinitarian dogma. Among the Apostolic Fathers, there had been nothing even remotely approaching such a mentality or perspective.”—(1967), Vol. XIV, p. 299.In The Encyclopedia Americana we read: “Christianity derived from Judaism and Judaism was strictly Unitarian [believing that God is one person]. The road which led from Jerusalem to Nicea was scarcely a straight one. Fourth century Trinitarianism did not reflect accurately early Christian teaching regarding the nature of God; it was, on the contrary, a deviation from this teaching.”—(1956), Vol. XXVII, p. 294L.According to the Nouveau Dictionnaire Universel, “The Platonic trinity, itself merely a rearrangement of older trinities dating back to earlier peoples, appears to be the rational philosophic trinity of attributes that gave birth to the three hypostases or divine persons taught by the Christian churches. . . . This Greek philosopher’s [Plato, fourth century B.C.E.] conception of the divine trinity . . . can be found in all the ancient [pagan] religions.”—(Paris, 1865-1870), edited by M. Lachâtre, Vol. 2, p. 1467.John L. McKenzie, S.J., in his Dictionary of the Bible, says: “The trinity of persons within the unity of nature is defined in terms of ‘person’ and ‘nature’ which are G[ree]k philosophical terms; actually the terms do not appear in the Bible. The trinitarian definitions arose as the result of long controversies in which these terms and others such as ‘essence’ and ‘substance’ were erroneously applied to God by some theologians.”—(New York, 1965), p. 899.Some Biblical Reasoning ---In Matt. 24:36 it says "“Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father." If the Son is equal to the Father, how is it that the Father knows things that the Son does not? And why does the holy spirit not know? When Jesus was teaching in Mark 12:28-30, here is the commandment that he said was greatest "Now one of the scribes that had come up and heard them disputing, knowing that he had answered them in a fine way, asked him: “Which commandment is first of all?” Jesus answered: “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel, Jehovah our God is one Jehovah, and you must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind and with your whole strength.’ "Jesus never claimed to be equal to God. He said in John 14:28 "You heard that I said to you, I am going away and I am coming to you. If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am"Peter, one the apostles, tells us what he believed in Matt 16:15-17 "He said to them: “You, though, who do you say I am?” In answer Simon Peter said: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In response Jesus said to him: “Happy you are, Simon son of Jo′nah, because flesh and blood did not reveal to you, but my Father who is in the heavens did."In Matt. 26:39, speaking of Jesus, “Going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.’” If the Father and the Son were not distinct individuals, such a prayer would have been meaningless. Jesus would have been praying to himself, and his will would of necessity have been the Father’s will.John 8:17, 18 (Jesus is speaking) “In your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true; I bear witness to myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness to me.” So, Jesus definitely spoke of himself as being an individual separate and distinct from the Father.I won't even touch the one on hellfire. That would possibly take longer.
Thanks for the link inbal, and I apologize for my fellow diggers from the more retarted side of the web who are digging you down. Not believing in something doesn't give you anyone right to be ignorant and bash it. Learn the facts or keep your mouths shut people...
!@eschompthis - you wrote miracles, even science cannot explain today's miracles (don't believe it exists? tell that to all those people who experienced it and documented it in the reader's digest!) if you don't still believe that. why are you still alive in this chaotic world when everybody should be all DEAD --because of entrophy? look it up.
@rockefellerAre you upset that your mother will die happy because she knows God, and not because of anything your bitter, pathetic, loser ass did for her? I have no sympathy for someone so consumed with his own bitterness that he loses sight of what he SHOULD be focused on: helping his mother be as comfortable as she can be. Do you really want her last thought before she goes to the Lord to be how bitter her son is? Do you really think insulting her faith is really what she wants from you?I would rather live like there is a God and find out there isn't than live like there isn't and find out there is!
@jakatak"Atheists should be able to block out bible headlines."True, but they won't. They want to see the Bible headlines so they can come in and spam with all of their hatred. No Atheist I have ever heard of can resist any oportunity to talk s**t about Christians.
I would just like to take this chance to remind you that not all Christians are Republicans. I personally found that Republicans were the least Christ like party and I switched to Christian Socialism which, if you read what they stand for is in direct correlation to how Jesus tell us to love others. I don't want to be part of a popular group. It's more important that my life and actions line up with the God I worship and His word.
You sound very angry and hurt. I'm so glad your mother has found salvation. I'm sure she is praying for you to also. Maybe you're going through some hard times in life that are causing this anger. Consider that it may be Gods way of stripping you of your pride and getting your attention so one day you can be reunited with your mother in Heaven. Embracing a life without God has obviously not made you happy or given you peace. You may have given up on God but I assure you, He will never give up on you. He promises, "I will not abandon or leave you as orphans in the store, I will come to you." When you're ready to call out He will be there. I will pray for both of you.
