I just recently started playing Final Fantasy 6 for the very first time. The dated graphics in no way detract from the fact it is completely f**king awesome. Most old games I pick up are a distraction at best, it often being hard to get over how far the platforms have moved on, but this one has me hooked.I was a Sega devotee as a kid. I wish I'd been able to convince my parents to buy both consoles so I hadn't had to wait until now to discover gems like this - I can't wait to get cracking on the rest of this list.
Amen... turn based rpg's are the best... Earthbound was amazing. Super Mario RPG was great. I jumped on the bandwagon back in 95 with Earthbound... I rented that game so much I could have bought it... and then did... from blockbuster, used for like 24 bucks... I ended up going through and playing it through about 3 or 4 times.
I have been saying the SNES was the best system ever for the longest time (hell, even my icon is an SNES) but no one ever wants to believe me that 16-bit games can be just as awesome, if not more awesome, then modern ultra-pretty consoles. For example: FF4 > FF12, Mario 3 > Mario Sunshine, Zelda: Link to the Past > *
If you want it now on a TV, go on Amazon and pick up Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PSX for I think $14.99. The only (big!) downfall of that game is the loading sequences are really obstructive. 5 seconds to open the menu, 3-4 seconds to initiate each battle (the game just freezes until it's done), really bothers me.

how is this a "best" list? it includes every big RPG released on SNES.

Breath of Fire 2 may have had the most intriguing story ever.
