you're ugly too but at least I can drive the air car around
grumpyrainMar 20, 2007
> Is the car itself emitting pollution? You're kidding right? What is your point? The main reason we are looking for alternative fuels is to reduce greenhouse emmissions. Any alternative has got to produce fewer emmissions. You can't just drive around without some way of compressing the air. Any emmissions required to compress the air is part of the footprint of this type of vehicle. You don't drill for compressed air, you have to compress it yourself. Again, it is simply a battery.

Be nice if the damned thing had a heater and I wonder what effect air temperature will have on range? I assume range'll drop with temperature but by how much?

But then, on the lighter side, Bush's oil buddies may force the auto insurance business to sell their industry to them and if this air powered car get massed produced and popular, it'll cost nothing to run, but 20 K a year to insure it.

Thats assuming stations actually saw decent profit from fuel (they don't). I think that if I just saved $45 filling my car with air/water/soylent-green instead of 20-gallons of premium gas, I'd be quite a bit more likely to pick up an 89 cent snickers bar or $1.29 bottle of coke while i was there.

The hell does the damn thing sound like? A high-pressure piss?

Hah, my mistake. There's a video. It actually doesn't sound too bad.

Same car, new mass-production agreement. Good luck guys-- I hope this great idea takes off! :)

I wonder if some of the thermal energy difference in the piston engines could efficiently be made use of. They said the engine itself was warm (surprising) and the exhaust was below 0 degrees. Seems like the engine itself is pretty inefficient if there is such a big temp difference. Wonder how the rotary engine compares? Anyway, a peltier or Stirling engine could produce additional power from the temp difference between the engine and exhaust gas....

you could use solar and wind power to compress the air...

It's been a year, and with gas prices over $4 in some parts of the country and set to go higher, an immediate development like this would be wonderful. Provided we all have jobs, that is.I wonder: If they worked out deals with convenience store owners, would people pay for a tank exchange program, sort of like gas grill LP tanks? I could see there being money in that...jeez Louize, I know it sounds evil to charge for air, but the poor folks at convenience stores gotta eat just like the rest of us, and I'd wager that there's a lot of people who work at such places.
