news.cnet.com — Speculation that Wal-Mart would sell a $99 iPhone was put to rest on Friday when the official announcement came out sans the double digits. However, all hope is not lost. AT&T is selling a refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G in black for $99 with a two-year service contract through Wednesday, New Year's Eve. That beats AT&T's previous price tag of $149.

Did you miss the part where I said I wasn't in the US?At launch, Optus in Australia charged AU$7/month for the iPhone 16GB (or AU$2/month for the 8GB) if you took the $59 phone plan for 2 years. Which has since gone up to the exorbitant price of...au$9/mo. More expensive plans were $0.

I got a free refurbished Blackjack II from AT&T when I renewed my contract and it was like new. They even replaced it when I broke the screen (I broke the LCD, not the plastic over the screen, so it didn't count as "physical damage.") I've had the Blackjack II for about 6 months now, but I can get a refurbished 8GB iPhone for the non-discounted price of US$199 or the 16GB for 299. Seems like a pretty good deal considering new it's 399 and 499 respectively.

Why would you need a data plan if you have wi-fi available most of the time?
