consumerist.com — Guadalupe Pequino of Fountain Inn, South Carolina bought $8.64 worth of food from Burger King with her Visa Check Card. Unfortunately for Guadalupe, the cashier typed in $8,648.54 as her total and the amount was debited from her account.

Why keep so much in your checking account... could be earning interest elsewhere...

Even if she can't speak a word of english, last time i saw the digits 0 through 9 are still the same in spanish! Unless she thought South Carolina used pesos as their currency....And I sorta hate to say it but I agree with you too. If you're in america, you'd better learn to speak English. I wouldn't move to France and expect others to converse with me in English...

Man this night has opened my eyes !! I always knew that giving the guy at the cashier an extra fifty cents or a dollar would totally confuse him or her..... (so I could get a Five dollar bill back etc.) But this takes fast food stupidity to a new low. Now I am paranoid to give these scoundrels my ATM card. God forbid I end up paying for a $400 dollar taco or a $18,000 dollar Happy Meal.

"Teen working mind-numbing job makes mistake, store fixes problem, and we all lived happily ever after except the consumerist who need a villain."Yeah, but is Burger King going to pay all of the bounced check fees, etc that the consumer is going to get hit with?

My beef is the gas stations that insist on holding your credit card while you pump gas. Then at the end of the month you find a Love's charge for several hundred dollars of CB equipment. If I drive off without paying, I lose my license, but these scumbags are still fighting me on the charge and guess who's still paying interest charges on his VISA while it's contested?

If you drive a truck for a two week stretch or any type of travel you do. What idiot would carry $2000 or more cash with them into a truck stop?

I work at Target and any transaction over $400 requires us to do a double check with the guest's ID, card, and manually type in the last 4 digits of the card to verify it.

If you make an effort to speak French - and of course know some French - they will quickly speak adopt English as the language of the conversation. If you know no French or put forth no effort to use it then you will find yourself locked out of English. At least that is how it used to be in France. It is a kind of neat system. If you want to use English in France, you have to earn the privilege by learning French. They help you, because once you are good enough to be understood, despite mauling the grammar or enunciation - you are not forced to slowly grind out your French phrases. I suppose i you really made them like you or implored them, they might let you try.In most of the US it is not an option because most Americans are not bilingual. English is kind of a necessity here.
