The less standard your resume is, the less of a chance the HR person's scanner and resume reading software will be able to read it. Therefore your resume will go into the trash.

Topher06Any headhunter that wants you to gentlemen up your resume like a ten-year-old- girl's spiral notebook is an idiot.

"I'm a recruiter for the pharmaceutical industry"You do? I could've sworn you ran a highly successful computer game developer in Bellevue, Washington.

"Even more important is the interview."You don't get an interview if your resume lands in the trash can. Your interview will get you the job, but your resume gets you in the door.

When hiring, the first method I always use to reduce the number of resumes to look through is to take half the pile and throw it in the bin. After all, you wouldn't want to hire somebody who is unlucky...

since I can't respond to the designer for some reason, I'll respond to myself.Yes, agreed. A good designer has a style, a great designer can do any style very well. In the market I'm in, designers are unfortunately a dime a dozen. The firm I did the hiring for had a style that we were known for. We could do other styles, but people wanted a specific look. Having a primary style that matched us (as most people design their marketing material in the style they feel most comfortable in) was a great asset because they didn't have to take the time to learn our style. As for the portfolio, there doesn't have to be that wide of a variety. We would rather see 4-5 strong design concepts with supporting material (a complete marketing program is one piece) and yes, they should show your strengths; if that means one style, then so be it. Your pieces in your book should blow us away not always show a wide variety of styles. As for the portfolio matching the rest of the material. yes, the book, layout, style, etc should match the rest...the pieces don't, but they better fit into the book. If you come in with a very European resume / cover letter / giveaway piece / etc and then come in with a book that has a western style, we're going to wounder why you put in the work to make your marketing material work together, but not your book. Everything should have a certain consistency to them

The most important thing to remember is the person reading it is a person. Well, usually they're people. But, assuming there is a human there, they're all as individual as you are. I've found that just treating people like people tends to be enough to get me an in.

I'm in charge of hiring designers at my company. IF you're a designer, none of these rules apple. Use good paper, shows you know how to select a decent stock. Use a non-standard format, shows you're creative. Use design elements, shows you've got style. Yeah, if you're applying for a job pouring concrete - none of this applies. Personally, i liked the resume they cited as a bad example.

Hmmm... have to disagree with that. In the world of design OCR'ing documents is not the norm and along with PDF e-mailing of resumes, many paper resumes are still used....

YIKES! Most of these comments seem to be off the mark because they are coming from a different perspective in terms of target field. I think these tips were geared for someone in the visual design field. Also for someone not as experienced in resume writing.I am a college Career Counselor who works with visual arts, design and architecture students, and I think these tips will help them tremendously!
