M$ has always been terrible with UI designs. The few times they've gotten things right, they end up upgrading it later to something nasty. I don't trust them with any UI decisions.
Now, I read most of this digg, and saw a lot of talk about having to reboot in order to change your font size, for the display. Are you talking about applying accessibility or "ease of access" settings? Because you don't have to reboot in order to change the font size if that's all you want to do. Instead of jumping in and defending vista as a knee jerk reaction, I decided to test this assertion. I went into the area of display settings that controls look and feel, (right click desktop, personalize, windows color and appearance, open classic appearance properties, advanced). I chose Icon and changed the font, and size of the font, and it did the thing where the screen goes all gray, and comes back with the new settings. No reboot, all in all, it took about 20 seconds. And once I got to the area where that setting is located (among many other font sizes you can change individually, instead of one huge sweeping change), it took less than 2 seconds. The only thing that irritated me, is that in the name of ease of use, they made it take longer to get to that setting, due to it's being omitted from the simplified settings area. Why this irritated me, is because they even had to. I hate it when things get dummed down to the lowest common denominator, because a small portion of people are incapable or unwilling to learn new things. The article is completely based on non issues, the writer is completely ignorant of the fact that there are new features in vista that makes all of the things he talked about easier. He needs to learn how to use vista before he starts going on about it's sins. There are sins mind you, but these are not the sins your looking for. Move along. The bitch that cracked me up the most was the one by a poster here that was complaining about MS DRM. Like the makers of the iTunes is any better in that regard? It is to laugh. Yuk Yuk.
"What would the desired action be in this situation?"How about telling you before its starts copying, thereby saving us the time it takes to go thru 600 files before stopping the process and requiring user feedback?
"Meh - we'll all be using it in a year or two regardless of how many sins it has committed."Speak for yourself Leonard Lemming. Regarding comments about the necessary restart following an adjustment to displayed fonts; to clarify for those who somehow misinterpreted the complaints as purely literal, it's important that you learn to understand the context of rhetoric. In this case, the font issue isn't being used as the sole qualifying attribute of Vista. Instead the authors are painting a picture of the absurdity of Vista as a "Wow" of an OS by commenting on a severely incongruent OS behavior. The weight of their statement is directly related to the amount of contrast between the touted ability of the company to provide an "easy" to use, secure, advanced, "Wow starts now" OS and the products inability to provide a more transparent method for users to alter their font display settings. You see what they are doing is discrediting the OS by using sizable inconsistencies. In other words, "We can put a man on the moon, but we can't..." While it's sure that your compassion is well meant, there's no need to worry, these people aren't plagued with rapidly deteriorating eyesight. Instead they are harnessing what many dub, "a figure of speech", which they are utilizing to add emphasis to their point. Is it just me or was the curtain not pulled back years ago? Anyone tinkered with Office 2007 lately? Anytime you want to enable a new feature you HAVE to validate via WGA; surely no one is foolish enough to truly wonder why. Combine that with the atrocious DRM configurations and the constantly nagging UAC (not to be confused with unix-style password/permissions implementation) which continuously displays decision making criteria that most people's mom's will never understand, and it's plain to see Vista is as transparent an OS experience as igneous rock. Many users continue comparing Vista to OS X, Ubuntu and other alternatives to what avail I have no idea. It must have something to do with the minds tendency towards dichotomies. There's a lot to be said for something that can stand firm on it's own, without the need for comparison. Vista can't. Microsoft's ability to disguise their cash crop as something other than just that becomes more obvious with each release. It's unfortunate for those that still can't see it, but time is on their side. Just as it's taken time for Microsoft to drill the idea home that Windows is the only OS available for anyone that wants to participate in the modern age, so to will it take time to pull people's attention far enough back from the shimmering illusion long enough to see outside the matrix. My hope is that more and more people will eventually decide to unplug from the matrix in order to discover more elegant alternatives that are truly there to elevate experience and productivity instead of only sell, sell, sell. I have no vested interest in such an outcome hence ultimately the shape of things is of little consequence to me and others who have seen the light. I don't hate Microsoft, in fact I could care less. If anything I often feel overly embarrassed in regards to their products and tactics. Anyone who has ever cringed while watching Mikey's phone call to the answering machine in the film Swingers will know the feeling I speak of. Let's face it, "the WOW starts now!" more or less sums up the caliber of the company and products at large. How else can Microsoft's decade-late arrival to the power of the Internet be explained? 2007 marks the year the concept of "Windows Live" comes to be!? Are you kidding me!? Not to mention the immensity of the innovations behind the initiative: Windows Live Maps, Books, Ads, Spaces, Search, etc. Gee, those sound vaguely familiar. And then there's Zune; "Welcome to the Social." It's all so pathetically embarrassing I can't go on. I almost pity the fools. Simply put, I know how empowering it was the first time I was introduced to Windows alternatives. A binary breath of incredibly fresh air sums up the experience; something I'll never forget, and certainly wish for others.Vista, Office, and the overall Microsoft experience is none other than one big "Ultra" pop-up.

@kutzaI'm on SuSE atm and although I dislike a lot of it i've got to admit the start bar is actually better than vista's one, if not much the same as.

My Comment to: Number 5 - Windows copying has not improved:Improved - YES - you can skip now something, when it's not OK to copy it (could be improved in the future)Improved - NO ! - Copying by Explorer has VERY SEVERE BUGS ! IT'S DANGEROUS TO USE !:- look at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1193072&SiteID=1- look at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1183507&SiteID=1- when you have a lot of files/dirs to copy, the chance to loose your data is SIGNIFICANT, the system becomes unstable- as suggested on this site by another writer people should use xcopy or other tools to copy larger amounts of data: i do NOT agree ! That proposal is NOT for Mr. / Mrs. Everybody. Explorer MUST be Fault-Proof ! When there are limits somewhere to use Explorer, then Explorer MUST tell me this - and NOT just Crash in the middle of a Copy-Task. And Explorer should be the right tool for ANY amounts of files and dirs (i would accept when things take LONGER to finish - but it must be done as expected !Do you agree or not ?simmons2
