Were there no good indie movies before the 70s? It seems like every best of whatever list always include only stuff in the last 30 years.

@PacoDG:Primer is a great movie, you'll enjoy it. But like retinaburn said, the audio is a bit weak (not only that, but sometimes characters talk over each other or interrupt each other--kind of like real life). I find it's easier to follow with subtitles turned on.

Bad Taste is number 11 !! HA HA !Yea, that one definitely counts as "independant", much more so than _many_ of the other films on this list.Run Lola Run and El Mariachi definitely deserve better. In what world is 'Cube' even _slightly_ better than either of those movies? I mean, don't get me wrong, I kinda liked Cube despite it being slow and having uneven acting, but the movies at 50 and 49 are both _way_ better.

Independent is so subjective. These are good films, but half of them are independent in name only. Many of these films shot independently but were guaranteed some sort of distribution even before the first reel was developed.

A Scanner Darkly should be on there.<a class="user" href="http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-11761-Milwaukee-Indie-Film-Examiner~y2009m5d28-A-Scanner-Darkly">http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-11761-Milwaukee ...</a>

Contrary to what everyone has said on here, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind IS an independent film. While it does contain very popular actors (Jim Carry, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood) and did have a $20 million budget, it was distributed by Focus Features which is an independent subsidiary of Universal.Focus has also put out many other independent hits, most famous of which would be Brokeback Mountain. They've released Milk, Traffic, Burn After Reading, Atonement, The Constant Gardener, among others. However, there are some films I'm surprised not to see on this list, including; Pulp Fiction, A Clockwork Orange, Green Street Hooligans, One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest, Easy Rider, My Own Private Idaho, Se7en, American History X, Platoon, Little Miss Sunshine, Bottle Rocket, or The Big Lebowski.
