Mostly because being exposed to the weather and such, risks dirt and even moisture on your internal lens elements.. and it's covered in the policies I've used. I had a camera at WDW that I took from a cold AC hotel room, then outside into the humidity and it created a moisture spot right on the interior element. My EW paid for 2 $70 cleanings and a $160 focus repair, and it cost me only $49.
