Sure, the unemployment rate might make people pissed off and vote Republican, but does anyone seriously think that'll change things? Whatever change may happen in the country's economy has nothing to do with what political party is in charge.
True, insofar that our only party choices are Coke and Pepsi. Breaking the duopoly and allowing more-representative voices a chance in government would help.
Atom - Most republicans, and most democrats are sell outs. Not some - most, nah - the overwhelming majority are sellouts. As evidense, I offer you the last 8 years. Both sides have been co-opted, and corrupted. Both sides. And the masses continue to pinball themselves from one to the other, from one to the other and with each cycle, the American people get less, pay more and lose more control. Maybe Libertarianism isn't the way to go - but it is leagues beyond anything that is being offered by either of the two party illusionists.
@I3leedUmm how about virtually all social issues... Gay Marriage, drugs, and privacy just to name a few.Further. Republicans have proven for over 25 years that they do not intend to cut spending. You should read up on what libertarians actually stand for.http://www.lp.org/platform
@ctiger2No, I understand that. But do you really think this "independent" body called the "government" did it all by themselves? Or with just a BIT of help from the corporations that they're handing everything over to?Crony capitalism is right, but you're not going to get rid of it with further deregulation. Just because the sheriff in town is letting crime happen doesn't mean you get rid of the position entirely. It means you get rid of the one that's f**king up and put in someone who WILL enforce the laws.
@ OliveWell you implied it, primarily through how you frame the borrower as a victim. "He's told this. He's told that." Never do you acknowledge that HE (the buyer) has a responsibility to make sure he isn't being sold s**t! Car salesmen will tell you a lot of bulls**t also - can we all get out of our car payments now?People may not buy houses often but they buy cars, don't they? They take out loans for education, vehicles, etc... Just because someone hasn't owned 2 or 3 homes doesn't preclude them from understanding the fundamentals of borrowing money!Have you ever purchased a home before? If so do you remember that book that you get that shows you EVERY SINGLE payment that you're going to owe over the term of the loan?Whether or not the lender is profitable has nothing to do with personal accountability and signing a contract! If I can convince you to loan me money for a start up, AND YOU AGREE, and then I don't repay you, you wouldn't have a problem with that? No matter how much I bitched and moaned about my co-founder making promises he couldn't keep, or that my company never got going because of the recession, I'm guessing you'd still want me to pay that loan! And you know what? I should, because I borrowed money from you knowing that I was going to pay back a certain amount each month.Your entire post hasn't even addressed the issue. You may as well have written "CORPORATIONS ARE BAD AND NO ONE SHOULD MAKE A PROFIT BECAUSE CORPORATIONS ARE BAD AND I THINK BIG CORPORATIONS ARE BAD BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I THINK."Give me a break.
We need more variety of production. The handcuffs need to be taken off of industry in the United States. They have been regulated, unionized, and taxed to death here; I don't blame them for looking for brighter, friendlier places to do business. If we want to return to really producing things once again we need to clean the slate and make our own country business friendly once again so they won't be afraid to hire new people and maybe take a chance on a new business. I think it is too late to turn the tide, but if people are really serious about wanting to have jobs in this country again, there is no other way.

Same thing would have happened. The president and vice don't give orders, they take them.
