@rasterbatorYou'll need a better comment than that to avoid getting buried. This isn't Slashdot. You aren't going to get modded as "funny" for jumping on the MS Hate Wagon just because it's the cool thing to do.
"In general, the more programs you have installed, the more memory they are using."Bah, i want to smack the author. At least once i month i have a friend complaining about his computer being slow because his hard drive is full... sure there are seek time issues but i believe prefetch fixes that for you and puts system files all in one nice section of the hdd.
While some of the tips provide questionable benefit, it's hard to argue with the fact that disabling unnecessary startup programs will definitely increase the free CPU and memory available for other applications.
@cdahlkvist:I wasn't hating on MS, cdahlkvist and the rest of you down-modders. It is plainly a fact that it will take more than 15 minutes to tune up a PC. What's wrong with that comment? The truth shall set you free, cdahlkvist. I forgive you for your ignorance, my brother.
Steger has a point about an auto defragger like Diskeeper. Why would you wait a month or two a defrag? why not just have a utility do it for you daily? this way your machine doesn't feel the effects AT ALL!! You can even set it to defrag only when it's needed (it's smart like that) instead of at a set time. It's an awesome product even if it does cost a few bucks.

Suprised noone mentioned these, so here goes...UBCD - an excellent off-line diagnostic tool, mem / cpu / hdd tests all excellent to isolate windows / hardware problemshttp://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.htmlAutopatcher - a complete security patch / tweak rollup - perfect to bring a fresh install of sp2+ up-to-date *prior* to connecting the network cable. Also great if you don't trust MS any more to auto-update, monthly updates not long after patch tuesday.http://www.autopatcher.com/
