salon.com— The Bush administration's Torture 13. They authorized it, they decided how to implement it, and they crafted the legal fig leaf to justify it.

The terrorist mean to kill us, no matter what. They deserve every kind of insect in a box, as much water as it takes to stop the senseless missile attacks in Israel, the bombings in Bali, Spain, Russia, Iraq and many untold places.( if you really call that torture, give my a break.) And the left is focused, blindly on Bush.(why??????) GET A GRIP AND GET REAL. This whole investigate who on torture thing, is total foolishness. They will come for anyone's head - and take it off. That does not seem to be important to the left. It matters to me, my family and the community that we live in. Drown them, drop them into a box with a hornet's nest, if it prevents that chaos that the terrorists mean to inflict on us and the world, then go ahead, STOP THEM NOW AND FOREVER. Torture is what happened on September 11, 2001, not water and insects at prison camp in Cuba. And by the way, just because the names have changed, and if you have not forgotten, it is still a time of war.
Greg, I don't agree because of the context. On the battlefield there are fewer absolutes and in the heat of the moment you have to make decisions quickly; ideas about morality are often thrown out. it's also different if the US was occupied by a hostile force and thousands of people's lives were at risk every day.But they weren't. We all know now that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and invading Iraq has done nothing to make anyone safer. We also know that the government were desperate for information which would justify the invasion, and it's no coincidence that the torture started just when they were most desperate. They authorised torture to get information that would support the plans they already had, not to save lives in the 'ticking time-bomb' scenario. And as a result of their ruthless pursuit of justification, they got a lot of extremely dodgy intelligence, none of which turned out to be correct. And in the process they tortured and even killed dozens of completely innocent people. In a different situation with a less dishonest government, using severe interrogation methods to save lives is a defensible position. But that's not what happened here.
