kotaku.com — GameTrailers countdown of the 10 Most Difficult of all time brings back so many painful memories for me. For once, I played every game on the list, and the development of the dirty mouth I have today can be directly traced back to many of these.

Thanks for the explanation, but I think the key here is "you can't please all the people all the time", as you said. However, linking to the source gives you the "moral" upper hand. People upset with you linking to a blog are trying to give the original source that did most of the work the credit they deserve, people upset with you linking to the source are only comfortable with a familiar name. And linking to Kotaku/Joystiq because it is more likely to hit the front page just makes you seem like a whore.

It looks like they took a list of the 100 most popular console games of all time, and picked out the ones regarded as hard for a retrospective. In a world with tens of thousands of games produced since the Atari 2600, these are far from the hardest. This list is closer to being "the 10 most popular games of all time" than "the 10 hardest games of all time". At least a few of them would be right in the prior case, where I think I could only credit one in the latter. Most of the hardest games of all time are ungodly horrors of the Atari/TI 99/C64/Apple II era, in which playability just wasn't adequately considered, and so ludicrous, utterly unreasonable difficulty made it in there far more often. They're less loved games at this point, in general, for that fact. And understandably so. But they're frequently much harder than these, all of which (with the possible exception of Battletoads) pretty much anyone can beat with some solid persistence.

Kaizo Mario World....I know it's just a hack but it's by far the hardest game I have ever played.

It wasn't that hard, once you got past that stupid milkshake level it got easier, I even managed to beat it a couple of times.

This is a good list -- Ghouls and Ghosts was single-handedly the hardest game I ever played. Battletoads wasn't as hard tho.

I hope you keep it up. I tried making a game once and the graphics were a walk in the park but when it came to the code I wanted to poke my eyes out.

I believe that many of the now vintage games (->1990s) were so much a harder than they are today. Nowadays, it's all about the mainstream players and never the hard core ones.
