time.com — Several of the best-funded and most-publicized tech launches of the last ten years have ended in failure. Many large technology companies which had significant market share and product advantages in large industries lost those advantages.

I think Mr. McIntyre needs to re-read the dictionary definition of the word "Failure". The Zune a failure? Segway a failure? What a moron! If the Zune was a failure, it never would have made it past 2006. Simply because The Zune did not put Apple's Ipod off the market does not mean the Zune failed. So the Segway didn't put the Auto Industry and Bicycle manufactures out of business? Who the f**k cares? It is successful enough to still be in business. By this article's standards, Apple's whole line of Mac computers should be considered a failure, because they have not taken full control of the industry.

Iridium (#2 on the list) launched in 98 too, but failed in the past 10 years. Dreamcast could be argued to have done the same thing.

Where's the Newton? Oh, that's right....we can't speak of Apple's failures. :-D

The most tragic fail of all... The Dreamcast. WHY did you leave us so soon?

"Ok, you can tell the author doesn't like Microsoft."Okay, I can tell you're an idiot. When Microsoft launches a new O/S with the same name as an Oldsmobile station wagon and it sucks? What the hell does that say about you? When you have unlimited money, resources and are the most experienced O/S engineers on the planet and you fail? One name Ballmer. The Zune, again unlimited resources and and existing successful model from which to start, copy and improve and you fail? One name Ballmer.Yahoo! Oh wait, Ballmer tried to buy them which would have cost Microsoft to lose about 30 billion but an idiot of possibly equal measure prevented him.The board of Microsoft must be so proud, this guy would be sweating to keep his job as a shoe store salesman in an outlet mall if he hadn't met Gates.

No they didn't. They could have released it themselves, through the very same market as the iPod. From the Apple store, Best Buy, Wal Mart, etc. Unlocked for everyone (which by mhz meant verizon, AT&T, and T-mobile at first release, but still), and keeping all the same infrastructure for apps, etc. they had now.The only thing we MIGHT have lost was the initial release of visual voicemail. Which is pretty much a non issue in hindsight now isn't it?

Apple's goal has not been to become to majority with their computers so far so how could they fail at something that they have not striven for?The Zune was marketed and touted as a potential iPod killer or at least viable competitor. It is a failure.
