blog.micropledge.com — Recently I wrote a blog entry about bloated software, and how much better Foxit PDF reader was than Adobe Reader. But I was using Adobe Reader 8. Little did I know how much superior version 9 would be.

move what in the what now? why bother with that and then having to disable auto-updates to remove that Update5 folder from your MyDocs? install foxit and be up and running in seconds - simple.with regards the article - excellent stuff! made me laugh out loud. especially the comment about the acrobat.com link in the start menu. whoever said sarcasm was the lowest form of wit? :)

Fail for still larger than version 8. I like pdfs but I don't like adobe reader. Why is it sooo big? Why does it tend to crash and run out of memory or never terminate itself? It's just going to sit in the background long after I'm done reading the page until I figure out where that extra 200mb of memory went. What happened to the acrobat reader that shipped on two floppies and STILL supported pages as detailed as you ever needed? I wouldn't mind so much but electronic forms are still pretty rare. Make it so I never have to fill out a paper application again and you can make it 500mb for all I care.

software that takes up a significant fraction of a gigabyte of memory just to read (not edit!) one file type is awesome.

I am a bit surprised by this blog entry. From my point of view, Reader 9 follows on the trend Reader 8 installed: it's fast at the start, and compared to version 8, scrolls quickly for my slow computer. Or at least, this is on the Mac OS X platform. At work, because of corporate inertia, we still use Reader 7 on Windows to read PDF. Most of the documents we use are in PDF format and rather huge (100 / 200 pages). On my corporate computer (pentium 4 class with 756 MB of memory), I find Reader 7 to be very adequate for the job - it's much better to use the PDF version than the native Word (.doc) version for reading.I tried Foxit, but it unfortunately had layout and performance problems in some (but not that many) documents. I think it caters to a different audience and use: Foxit might be better suited for quick start and quick reading of small/medium PDF documents (such as what you can find on the web), for which it is faster. Adobe Reader is more geared towards huge business documents, for which it is more adapted.
