The Thief, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia are also good for young adults. Written by Megan Whalen Turner if I remember correctly.

I can easily recommend the Airborn series (by Kenneth Oppel) to any "young adult". It's a steampunk adventure with airships, sky pirates and cryptozoology; this roughly equates to awesome.

His Dark Materials is the best YA book series... ever? Yes, I'd say so.
