readwriteweb.com — I decided to make a list of the Top 10 Objections to New Online Tools and What You Can Say in Response. I surveyed my nearly 1300 friends on Twitter and got all kinds of thoughtful replies. Below is that list; I hope you'll find it useful and leave comments helping to extend the conversation further.

The rebuttals to the objections are not always convincing, but the objections definitely exist

To date I have used few social media, because a) I fancied myself too cool school, and b) I didn't have a need. Now, working as a Marketing and Communications Manager, I have a professiona need to learn how to use these media for my organization. As well, Happily, I'm enjoying the learning curve. Sadly, I'm realizing that I'm the only person in the world who thinks it's cool I don't have a facebook account. As far as the arguments go...the truth is that some people don't need this sort of thing, and they don't want it. Despite my recent adoption of social media, I still loathe the cell phone. I get by without one everyday. I don't need or want it at this point. Now if my job required one, I'd go along. Some people are the same with social media. It was only in the last twenty years that "society" started happening on Internets. Some people were not, and still may not be, convinced that this e-society comstituted authentic community. They're wrong. That said, there's no point in inverting the argument, claiming that you need to participate in e-society to experience community.
