thesentinel.com — students duplicate the license plates by printing plate numbers on glossy photo paper, using fonts from certain websites that "mimic" those on Maryland license plates. They tape the duplicate plate over the existing plate on the back of their car and purposefully speed through a speed camera, the parent said.

This will be a nationwide problem soon. Those cameras are not police, they are easily fooled. A human can tell the difference between a photo of a license plate and a license plate but a camera sees only what it is designed to see. I hope that this will finally put an end to these camera's . The basic premise from the people who put these camera's up is that you are guilty because a photo was taken. Now there is cause to doubt each and every ticket issued using these camera's.

Wow, I cannot believe how obvious this idea is. I never thought of it before, but even with much older equipment that we use today this would be near trivial for the average geek to do. With a photo realistic image, I am not even sure that the human eye could tell at any distance if the plate is real or not. In fact, I now wonder if this has been more common than people think it is. How many people have paid for tickets thinking they may have done it or who did not want to fight the state? What about criminals who use this technique to hide their actions or frame others. It brings into question any case founded upon such a photo. The can of worms this open is simply horrendous. Now that this is on Digg and other like sites, I am pretty sure it is going to become and enormous issue.

I think I'm going to drive past one of these cameras with a giant picture of my butt taped to my license plate. Ideally this will cause an error when processing the fine, and a real actual person would be forced to fine my butt. I think I'll call it speed-mooning.
