Nothing wrong with a respectable community college degree. In my area, we have a very respected community college that is in a 2+2 partnership with a well-known and well respected local university. I know several people who graduated from a community college and have great jobs. As kuzotz said, community colleges are a great way to get the basics out of the way at a cheap price. Certainly better than just graduating high school.

It's also kind of a pain in the ass to get people to teach these upper level programs. I mean, sure, your average Community College can get a person with a Master degree to teach chemistry (although, profits are still crappy - ever been on a budget committee (Sp? OMG)?) for $40k a year, but getting these serious, respected phD types who teach at the bigwig schools isn't cheap by any means - they are doctors, and they get paid like it. Additionally, it's not like they are all biting at the bit to get a lowly teaching job.I'm sure many schools would adore expanding, but simply can't. Tuition rises to pay the bills.And then, yes, there is GPA statistics to consider.

I know what you mean about doing what interests you. I mean sometimes I wish I volunteered more when I was in high school, but only community type stuff around where I live like roadside cleanup and projects like that. You can see the fruits of your labor from those activities well after you're done with your service. I mean hell, I volunteered for a Hazardous Waste pickup day where I live, and I was sore and tired after a long day's work and I loved it. But I'm not gonna go out looking and volunteering for every single thing around here that exists. I don't want to take on projects just for the sake of stacking my stats, I want to enjoy the stuff that I do, whether I'm being paid for it or not.

Gap year is another option to consider before entering college. That way you can gain some experience abroad while working a job that can teach you perseverance.
