vcconfidential.com — While American youths study to head into law and finance, students in China and India are earning engineering degrees in droves and have passed the US in absolute numbers. If science and innovation drive the wealth and productivity of a society, we have a problem...

The REAL problem is how they're going to get the chemicals and fecal matter out of their drinking water in India and China. That's assuming the Chinese government doesn't kill any of the scientists for dissidence too.

You must have forgotten that India is home of the caste system.

Someone talked about "greatest civilization"<a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_Valley_civilization">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_Valley_civilization</a> Civilizations are not build in a day, a month or a year. Considering the fact America got its Independence in the year 1776. That makes it 230 years ago.India acquired its Independence in the year 1947. That makes it 59 years.Everyone knows what Independence means to a country and what it can do for a country.230 years of Independence and everyone knows where America stands today. 59 years of Independence and everyone knows where India stands today.Agreed that all the major innovations come from America and yes America is technologically advanced, and yes American universities are more innovative, more creative and more everything.Respect to every innovation, discovery and creation. Respect to all scientists all over the world many of whombecame / become Americans but;Zero - <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryabhata">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryabhata</a>Mathematics - <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_mathematics">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_mathematics</a>Trigonometry - <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trignometry">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trignometry</a>Sanskrit for programming Artificial Intelligence <a class="user" href="http://www.gosai.com/science/sanskrit-nasa.html">http://www.gosai.com/science/sanskrit-nasa.html</a>just to name a fewMIT established in 1861,<a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT</a> Carnegie Institute of Technology ( currently CUM ) founded 1900 <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie_Mellon_University">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie_Mellon_University</a>UC Berkley founded in 1868 <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UC_Berkley">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UC_Berkley</a>Just to name a few American top universitiesSome one mentioned there aren't any Famous Indian universities. Now lets talk about the Indian universitiesIIT Bombay established in 1958 <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIT_Bombay">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIT_Bombay</a>IIT Kharaghpur established in 1946 <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIT_Kharagpur">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIT_Kharagpur</a>There are 5 more ( IITs )IIM Ahmadabad established in 1961 <a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Management">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Management</a>There are 5 more ( IIMs )where the acceptance rate is only 1% of the candidates; even with a top score.there is almost a difference of 100 years between the American universities and Indian universitiesHeck give India 230 years and you shall see what a "great civilization" is.In just 60 years time Indian universities are at par with the best Indian universities.Rome wasn't build in a day. So people need to change from AMERICA = WORLD to America is just another country on Earth.and do something about ( Mr President ). This ( his deeds ) is really going to hurt America / Americans in long term. That is really sad.In terms of world economy India is already showing great signs. By 2040 ( Almost 100 years after independence compared to 264 years of independence ( for America) )India is already going to be third largest economy in the world.<a class="user" href="http://www.hinduonnet.com/2004/04/28/stories/2004042804591800.htm">http://www.hinduonnet.com/2004/04/28/stories/2004042804591800.htm</a><a class="user" href="http://www.gs.com/insight/research/reports/99.pdf">http://www.gs.com/insight/research/reports/99.pdf</a>And if you think you ha vent heard of Goldman Sachs. Here is the link <a class="user" href="http://www.gs.com/">http://www.gs.com/</a>Yes, students from India come to American universities for studies because as stated above, American universities are innovative and technologically advanced. Currently that is. But why not, there is no harm in learning is there? Apart from that Smart Indians dint think INDIA = WORLD. Its only 1.5 lakh students every year ( 65000 to 130000 visas per year ). Where do all these students disappearafter they graduate, some go back to India, most of them get a job in some company in America. Hence, thousands of Indian minds are working behind the creation of "Greatest Civilization".Stop being so narrow minded learn to embrace and be smart :DThe final aim for everyone is to be "happy" ( i hope ). Are Americans the happiest people in the world ?are Indians happiest people in the world?<a class="user" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5456869/site/newsweek/">http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5456869/site/newsweek/</a><a class="user" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3157570.stm">http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3157570.stm</a>So technology hardly matters if your final goal is become happy and satisfied.

Even your own country folk acknowledge how clearly inferior you are on the world stage, what counter proof do you have to this?

Good thing we're still at the point were you're under our thumbs. MASS GENOCIDE FOR THE WIN!

Too bad the ITTs produce code monkey equivalents in all other engineering fields, and their university rankings worldwide reflect that quite throughly. They break into the top 50s.

I believe they work harder because of fear. Fear because job competition is so great in third world nations that employers can dictate the terms. If the employee does not like it they can leave and have no recourse. They are afraid to say "no" to anyone who is higher up the ladder and many will treat those who are lower on the corporate ladder as lower social standing individuals. The caste system is alive and well in the Indian corporate world and in many cases there is no room for individuality most Asian companies. BTW if there are so many engineers in India and China, how come they can't engineer decent road systems or or have safety engineers? Where are the mining engineers in China? Why on big civil engineering projects, India and China will actually outsource the engineering phase to countries such as Germany (or EU), U.S., Canada or Japan? Is ecological engineering available as a course in India ? How many environmental engineers work for the Indian and Chinese governments ?Sure, you can say this country gave the world "such and such" 500 years ago, fine. But what have theses countries really given us (besides a source of a cheap workforce) the past 50 years? If these countries are so great why is there a diaspora from these countries to the west ? Don't get me wrong, there are some great minds in engineering from people from these countries, but certainly they are rare and few in between. I would say there is a higher ratio of good, quality innovative minds from the west and Japan then from India and China and if you want to find a way to copy a technological idea there is no better country than China - China has come up with great social engineering practices to get people to do what the party wants or I will toss my little iron ring.
