techcrunch.com — As if MSN and the new AIM weren't enough, TechCrunch gives a first look at Yahoo's Vista Messenger which was unveiled at CES. The clunky client, which borrows from every stupid Korean social network out there, features bright colors, lots of 3d bevels, and annoying user avatars.

I like Gaim, but make sure you use the 2.0 beta. It works flawlessly with my AIM/MSN and is the closest thing I've found to Adium.

Make sure you go 2.0 beta, as 1.x crashes when you try to run MSN and AIM at the same time.

looks interesting, but are the features all optional, like some of teh buttons and icons i'd like to keep but a lot i'd want to remove (like all the ads and tabs)? If this is the case i'll download this when i get home from work tonight and give it a whirl.

"However unless there are some truly awesome features there is now way they are getting me away from Gaim."Waaait, you're saying the only way for you to stop using Gaim is if you found a client that had "awesome features"? I don't know if you've used many "official" instant messaging clients over the last, say, 4 years or so, but their list of features (many of which are USEFUL for everyday activity) far eclipse anything Gaim offers.Gaim is as bare bones a client as you'll likely ever use. Only Google Talk has fewer features than Gaim.

The new features are pretty nice, but does this really offer me something I couldn't do before? Fancy vector avatars? WTF cares? When was the last time you said, man, this avatar's curves could be so much more elegant. The buddy list zoom granted looks pretty handy, but is that worth the ads from yahoo? The main issue, for me, is that it's still just one messenger service app. I tried doing AIM messager, yahoo messager, msn messager, and googletalk, etc. But for all of their extras, I would much rather be able to sign on to all of these messenger services at once in one app (GAIM for me, trillian for some) rather than having 4 different applications open. I would rather have a toyota corolla that takes me everywhere than a Porsche that only goes down one street. Also, where is the linux and OS X support? These operating systems deserve some attention from yahoo, no?

every single option is independent from the next. so give it a try, and if you don't like it you can always run a-patch again and "restore" msn to its original settings.
