No, that's not really what happened at all.It had a lot more to do with a control economy model trying to compete in global market of free or mixed market capitalist countries. It wasn't military spending that brought down the USSR, it was the inability to compete economically with the rest of the world, thus sending them into ever deeper economic hardship for the decades prior to the collapse. Eventually people got fed up with living in perpetual poverty.
So why is this fairy story, only believed by American Republicans? Reagan was a joke, NOBODY took him seriously, except his chosen flock. The German people took down that wall, not Reagan. If credit is to be made, it should be Gorbachev for allowing it to happen.
