highschoolblows.blogspot.com — Ever since OS X came out, Apple made sure that it would not be possible to take a screenshot of a DVD. When DVD Player is open, you can't capture the screen with Grab. Command-Shift-3 and Command-Shift-4 both do not work when DVD Player is open. Until now, with this hack! And you can do it right out of the box, no shareware programs needed!

"It's ridiculous that someone would try to force Apple to implement such a pathetic 'copy-protection'. And why did Apple agree to implement it instead of working on something more useful? One can only guess that they were forced to by law, or maybe bribed? I can't imagine that this feature is profitable in itself."Nobody forced Apple. Apple did it of their own will."pirates will burn in hell" - Steve Jobs.

Desktop Move Player will let you play a movie as your desktop. <a class="user" href="http://www.freemacware.com/desktop-movie-player/">http://www.freemacware.com/desktop-movie-player/</a>

You can also use ImageWell to get the shot. Much nicer, I think.

genrebusters: maybe you aren't aware of this, but out of the box, WMP will not play dvd's, you must purchase an OEM dvd codec in order for it to do so. If your computer came with powerdvd or something, then you already have it.. but if you built your own machine, bought Windows XP, and installed it, you cannot play DVDs.

@eltoozero: Try it with DVD player running, Boy Genius. And yes I know there are other ways (different player, 3rd party apps, widgets) but that's kind of the point, no?@3Den: In Preferences, go to Video, there should be options for Source Aspect Ratio... I think you can give it as either e.g. 4:3 or 1.333, 16:9 or 1.777..whatever is right for the source video. you might have to play with the number a bit, but once it's right VLC will fill top-to-bottom and draw in the pillarboxes as needed. As for auto-stretching the video to fill the screen, I noticed that VLC .84 (for mac os at least) has the option to make the video stretch-to-fill. This is under Prefs->Video->Output->macosx, I would be surprised if there wasn't a similar option for windows.-jewdass

I can't speak for the Macintosh, but the fact that you can't take a screenshot of a video window with Print Screen is not any kind of "copy protection". It's just a little oversight on the part of the Windows programmers. You see, Windows uses something called an "overlay" when it displays video, in order to improve performance by using hardware scaling. Unfortunately, the Print Screen function isn't programmed to account for overlays (which are in a different place in memory with respect to the rest of the screen), so they are ignored; hence, the video frame is not recorded.
