Not sure where the 'irony' is, but I do agree with what you're saying. I remember thinking this back in the Napster days - use new distribution channels - don't shut them down. Can you imagine if the advertising industry had tried to shut Google down?
From what I've found, the site seemed to come down before the incredible "Digg Effect" took place. So, I don't know how much a site that has a giant spider on the front page yesterday day managed to destroy MD's site.
