Possibly eight million downloads...but I don't that many users (and certainly not on the desktop). I've downloaded it a few times and I don't use it anymore.
I have to agree with dyous87. "A non-Apple based PC is a much better value." is such a poor generalisation it's not even funny. For _me_ a non-Apple PC is better value... someone like my mother, an Apple would be ideal. It would also be better value for me - less time debugging and troubleshooting a Windows box.
Except web apps are slow as hell. Dreamweaver web designers push out some of the most s**t code I've ever seen, Photoshop would be good though only because gimp has user interface issues. More apps on linux means less vendor lockin, it's win-win.
Linux-very popular with those who use Linux.Windows XP-very popular with those who use Windows.OSX-very popular with those who have not a clue. BSD-very popular with those who seek a challenge. Toilet Paper-very popular with those who use bathrooms.
I have - on my test box atm - its really really (really) good and yast still kicks ass but some things ubuntu does better for "the average joe" - take software installation - suse is far easier to break and its slow. But yeh - visually and feature-completeness wise its amazing.

Dugg for irony. I wonder why more people didn't get it...
