lowendmac.com— The truth is that those expensive (and sometimes exploding) batteries are little more than repackaged NiMH AA cells. Replacement batteries run over $100. The cost of 6 AAs? Under $20.

User _MikeCerm_ is spot on. In addition, due to the relatively high energy per density available in Lithium cells, their use, etc., is regulated, and hence rechargeable batteries are made from individual cells.
We should go to gas powered laptops. small fuel tank where the batteries are located. small gas engine and generator instead of the power brick. we could use a hose to vent the exhaust gas in our faces.we could also go solar powered, but that would be kinda wimpy....
Haha, now you know why your getting ripped off for ultra high capacity laptop batteries, whether they are li-ion or nimh isn't the point, the fact that you get rip-jacked paying upwards of $200 for a product that costs MAYBE $2-15 to build is ripjacking the customers and keeping secrets of shoddy construction a secret until now!
Hi all, recently I am repairing my laptops battery pack. I have a little bit knowledge of digital electronics to understand how the battery pack circuit communicate its charging status to computers CPU. My laptop is Think pad R40e, using for last 2.5 years. I have disassembled its battery pack to replace one of its 6 cells. The battery stopped working as one of its cells not storing charge. The new battery pack costs around Rs 5K. If I only replace its damaged cell, it will cost Rs. 600.Anjan Majumder

You're reading the wrong article, then. Everyone was talking about the article the story gave.

On a similar topic, I'd like to know why a 20" LCD costs $400 and a 30" LCD costs $2000.

For a plain English overview of the fundamental flaws in the ZD net article, checkhttp://batteryuniversity.com/partone-5.htmIf only it were as simple as replacing with off-the-shelf batteries
