action.eff.org — Congress is now considering the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act (DMCRA, HR 1201), a bill that would amend the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to allow circumvention of copy protection for non-copyright-infringing uses. This would finally allow us to legally backup our DVDs and DRM'd music. Follow the link and contact your local representative!

from my congresswoman:Thank you for your correspondence regarding H.R. 1201, the Digital Media Consumer Rights Act of 2005 (DMCRA).The bill would require digital media distribution companies to label "copy protected" audio compact discs that may not work in personal computers, cars, and other consumer devices. The bill would also codify a citizen's right to make fair uses of copyrighted materials. The bill has been referred to the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, where it awaits further action. Many representatives of the entertainment industry continue to argue that the copying of material for personal use is not within the "fair-use" clause of the Copyright Law (USC, Title 17), and is only allowed because of a tolerance extended by the entertainment industry. Despite 30 years of Congressional action and Supreme Court rulings affirming consumers' fair use rights, the problem continues to be discussed. I believe Congress has the duty to ensure that consumers' personal use rights are safeguarded. Please be assured I will continue to closely monitor this legislation. If you have any questions or concerns about this or any other issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
