WinRAR was never evil (imho), and it's got more sentimental value for some of us (I've been using RAR since v2.0, which was for the old MS DOS).The main reason why I switched away from RAR to ZIP is because as a non-proprietary format it has better native support in OS-es (Windows/*nix) ... this is getting really important nowadays with the large spread of Internet, as it's better to keep data in an accessible format.I would really love to see Rarsoft open their algorithm to the world - they can keep it patented - and allow everybody to implement free decompressers without any fees. This would perhaps allow a larger spread of the format, and Rarsoft could make money by selling the compression SW and by improving the format as such.
