Buried as inaccurate. Luigi is player 2 in Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros and a lot of the other mario games. <a class="user" href="http://www.nesfiles.com/NES/Super_Mario_Bros/Super_Mario_Bros.pdf">http://www.nesfiles.com/NES/Super_Mario_Bros/Super ...</a> mentions luigi, as does the wiki article.

In this day and age, I think there -is- a deeper story, especially since we accept more fantasy/sci-fi stories nowadays. Think about it. A man, a no-nothing, mediocre plumber and his brother finds themselves traveling to an alternate universe where they end up discovering hidden powers within themselves and saving an entire race of people. If you take Yoshi Island's storyline, you can add the "twist" that the plumbers were original from Mushroom Kingdom (or born there, at the very least). It sounds cheesy, but it's rather epic in scale if you think about it over the course of several games.
