washingtonpost.com — Sun has a novel twist on the data center: Project Blackbox is a "data center in a box" with all the necessary servers, storage and networking equipment packed into a cushioned and cooled 20-foot- cargo shipping container. 7 builtin 19" Racks, 20% more efficient, 30% smaller, withstands 9G! Aimed at the YouTubes of tomorrow who need to set up fast!

Surprisingly, the containers can be daisy chained via a standard trailer hitch connection, providing 20GB/s bandwidth as well as turn signals and brake lights.

Seems to me that it would be a terrible security risk to have the datacenter in the parking lot. Someone could break in without having to enter your building. Someone could simply ram it with a pickup. Or, an enterprising young hacker could borrow his dad's rig and make off with the whole thing. Stolen laptops would seems like chump change. It would be difficult to get on to the roof, and that would take away a bit of it's easy portability. Might run into zoning restrictions, too. What would an Oil Rig need with a datacenter of this class? The new hacker rig <a class="user" href="http://members.surfbest.net/intermodal@surfbest.net/phterm01.jpg">http://members.surfbest.net/intermodal@surfbest.net/phterm01.jpg</a>

10 chickens by 10 chickens by 27 chickens. 2700 chickens is a lot.

Great idea and all, but look how cramped that thing would be for those who would have to maintain it! Won't someone please think of the admins?!

I liked it the first time, when APC did it (<a class="user" href="http://www.processor.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/P2650/36p50/36p50.asp&guid=)">http://www.processor.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/P2650/36p50/36p50.asp&guid=)</a> .I liked it the second time, when Google did it (<a class="user" href="http://www.self-star.com/CEO/2006/02/eniac-20-googles-data-center-in-box.html)">http://www.self-star.com/CEO/2006/02/eniac-20-googles-data-center-in-box.html)</a>Now Sun is jumping on this bandwagon too, and I'm just sad. Sun long ago lost all cohesion & direction. But at least their CEO blogs, so that counts for .. uhm. something?

"Pricing for the datacenter in a box starts at $559,000." according to Tom's.

Huge maintenance problems. Individual server racks are much more convenient. You can take a look at some designs here <a class="user" href="http://www.serverracksandcable.com">http://www.serverracksandcable.com</a>
