arstechnica.com— Connecticut substitute teacher Julie Amero was supposed to be sentenced today, but instead will get a new trial. She faced 40 years in prison for allegedly showing pornography to school kids.

@zybchIt is the IT department's fault but knowing how some of the school districts work, he/she probably mentioned the need to renew the licenses and they shelved it.Happens all the time in these places till some s**t hits the fan. Sadly its always the small fry who gets well fried.
you don't read too well. We are talking about fewer viruses and fewer pop ups not about no pop ups and no viruses. If you want no viruses or no pop ups don't turn on your computer.
I think this teacher should do a reverse lawsuit and sue everyone that was involved in her prosecution, which would include mandatory computer classes for those that are ignorant within the school and prosecution (including the judge). Even if she did purposely put porn on the computer (which she obviously did not) why would she receive a sentence that is, in most cases, more than a murderer, rapist, or child molester? This is an embarrassment on behalf of our court system. In my personal opinion I think everyone involved (although unrealistic) should share in the 40 years they were going to give in compensation for their extreme disgusting stupidity.
I apologize for my comments. It was absolutely inappropriate for me to post my frustrations and arrogant to offset the focus of this blog. Please ignore my comments!!! I do want to know about what I asked so please do not post on this blog and e-mail me instead.
I thought this (prosecutor's fault) at first, but then I read the transcripts of the trial. The main problem was that the defense attorney (John F. Cocheo) was incompetent. He committed malpractice, but since he has an advanced case of multiple sclerosis, he'll never be sued. Here's an example showing how he hamstrung his own expert witness (p. 193):Prosecutor Smith: I don't see how I can effectively cross-examine based on these documents that I should have gotten before trial so I could check it out.The Court: Why weren't these provided?Mr. Cocheo: I did not have these documents, Your Honor. The Court: You didn't have them, but now here they are. So I am not allowing it.The prosecutor knew he faced an incompetent defense, and took full advantage.Mrs. Amero was 4 months pregnant when this happened. She lost her child in a miscarriage, and since she was 40 years old, that was probably her last opportunity to have a child. The police officer (Mark Lounsbury) who testified against her maintains that he was right and Amero is evil, even after all the information that has come out. For example, he thinks the data in Windows registry HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTypedURLs are evidence that a URL was physically typed in, even though trojans like Meheerwar, Favadd-J, and Nethost-B are known to change this data. "Lieutenant James Daigle Junior, detectives **Mark Lounsbury** and Albert Costa and Officer First Class Scott Smith were accused of taking nude or topless photographs of three women who participated in underage drinking stings last November. Chief Louis Fusaro Senior fired Daigle and suspended the others on Tuesday."<a class="user" href="http://ww2.myupn9.com/Global/story.asp?S=818224">http://ww2.myupn9.com/Global/story.asp?S=818224</a>The judge, Hillary B. Strackbein, fell asleep during the trial, according to Alex Eckelberry, President of Sunbelt Software (who make the CounterSpy anti-spyware program).Amero's school principal called in the police and accused her of a crime, without telling the investigating officer that she had reported the problem with popups, and that she had sought help from other teachers. *Intent* is essential to the crime she was accused of, so this exculpatory behavior was hidden from investigators. Then the school board sent out letters to 750 parents naming Amero and saying she wasn't permitted to teach any more. The school IT director (Hartz) did not evaluate whether any malware was on the computer, nor did he tell the investigating officer that the content filter license had lapsed. The teachers' association (Connecticut Education Association) refused to get involved because substitute teachers are not unionized. The local newspaper (Norwich Bulletin) went on a witch hunt. Example "Intent was apparent... her deeds were disgusting and merit punishment" <a class="user" href="http://www.norwichbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070111/OPINION01/701110326">http://www.norwichbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070111/OPINION01/701110326</a>This is like some f**king tragic opera. That prosecutor is another Mike Nifong (the disgraced Duke University prosecutor). He should be disbarred.
