tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com — Connie Saltonstall of Charlevoix said today she plans to run against Stupak for the Democratic nomination of Michigan?s First Congressional District, citing Stupak?s efforts to stop health care reform if it doesn?t ban use of government money for abortions. Stupak, a former state trooper from Menominee, has held the seat since 1993.

The government won't pay for an abortion? So? That doesn't mean we're banning abortion or anything like that, just that the government isn't going to pay to have a potential life snuffed out. That seems fairly reasonable to me, regardless of whether or not you're pro-life or pro-choice.*However* I do have some objections to this. For instance, in the case of a victim of rape, incest or other crime where pregnancy was the direct result, the government should cover the abortion. The abortion should also be covered in the event that the pregnancy threatens the health of the mother and the baby cannot be brought to term safely and without risking serious damage.

The rapist should be forced to pay for it.

Ok, let me get this straight...You are saying that:*A partisan, right-wing editorial is opposed to health care*To prove their point, they hired a partisan, right-wing polling firm that is not neutral in any way*It's sponsored by the START OVER! coalition, a group with a vested interest in health reform failing*The poll only asks about "Obamacare" and using reconciliation and not the individual planks of reformYou do realise that you are talking about something that is both ignorant in it's genesis and completely not credible.

You and Chordonblue are so far off on this.Stupak is trying to limit the exchanges. Even then, the exchanges are STILL private companies. He is trying to tell PRIVATE insurers they can't fund abortion in their policies? Wow, I thought you guys wanted gov't out of business, especially insurers. So then his logic is that since the exchanges will get funding from federal dollars and be monitored by the gov't that it's the same thing. Well where is your outrage right now? We're already federally funding insurers who provide abortion - it's called letting them be corporations and enjoying tax breaks (as well as other protections). The logical conclusion is that you and Stupak want to ban abortion completely by backdooring it through insurers. But insurers can do whatever they want. Hell, I could incorporate tomorrow just selling "abortion insurance" if I wanted to and it's perfectly legal. But essentially Stupak would make it illegal if someone got any sort of contribution to their insurance from the gov't. Considering gov't is going to make contributions instead of employers, AS IT SHOULD BE, IT'S A JOB, NOT AN INSURANCE DELIVERY VEHICLE, you will have effectively banned abortion.

Yea, those darn puppies with their four legs and all thinking they're special. Someone needs to take them down a notch!

I hope she fails.

Gee, I dunno, Republicans somehow find it in themselves to vote for candidates that want Americans to die without health insurance. Puppies don't sound so bad by way of comparison

Fury420- Sorry but Governement doesn't work like that. I can't tell the governement not to spend any of my money on fighting in Iraq can I? Why is that different? If they paid for it out of their own pocket entirely I understand. But not the way you describe it.
